I'm outside Atlanta now. I stayed with another ultra owner last night who had a new modulator. Replaced it and the leak has stopped!

Bob, you are correct on an empty diff. But once it has been refilled, it should be fine. One of my sisters ran her differential almost dry once and then asked me to "check out that noise" for her. I topped it off and she drove that car for several years after that. When she was done with it, I took it over and drove it for a while. After I was done with it, I sold it to my best friend who

In the 70's I learned what the whining diff meant. Not that many miles and it locked up completely. Ruined my date and cost a tow bill plus rebuilt diff. Be very carful about the whining. A lock on the highway can be dangerous.

i went to see a friend who is a mechanic and he adjusted the carbs and left. I left soon after and the van had no power so I pulled over, put the emergency brake on... It was already on but just a little. Oops.

Check to be sure there is not ATF in the differential, not all that rare that it happens. Not good for R&P gears, not to mention the bearings. Hope it is all good.

I couldn't find it but thought I remembered a James Thurber cartoon with a guy driving around with a big speaker on top of his car shouting "The woorld is coming to an end"! UV with the speaker triggered something in my memory. I'm enjoying the exploits here. I worked on UV 420 which was driven here from Oregon, almost. Jim Brandberg Isanti, MN CorvairRepair.com

The first two pics are of the inside of the old solenoid. The third is the new one installed

Great news!! Sounds are magnified inside an aluminum box... Solenoid is almost new!

Rather than running a remote switch a mechanic friend here in town suggested replacing the solenoid. I took apart the old one. The posts were loose and it was missing a screw. Starts like a champ now. Anyway, my diff isn't making noise and Mike believes it's just how the powerglide should sound. We're going to flush the diff anyway and dial in the carbs a bit. He invited me to enter it in

And running just the flatlands of FLA. it may last for years.. leaving Matt time to finish the rest of the coach..

Matt, with that PA speaker on the roof, you look like you are ready to peddle icecream. Nice house by the way. Bob V. I have always heard that an expert, is. . . . a has-been, drip.

Closer and close!! As long as the Diff. doesn't get ATF in it... you should make it fine...if the whine starts to increase... drive slower and slower...

Hi. I made it to Centralia, Illinois. My parents still live in the house I grew up in. The starter is still acting up so I bought a starter button and my dad has a roll of 12g wire so I'll put a button on the dash. The diff is whining, I should flush it. I added a 1/3qt of 80w gear oil but it's whining a bit and what was in there was thick and dark.

Expert A spurt is a drip under pressure. An X is an unknown. Expert = An unknown drip under pressure. I also recall another definition from my days at Ford. An expert is anyone 200 miles from home. We are mostly 200 miles from the Ultravan so we can all be experts!

I agree. This is fascinating and a lot of fun to keep up with. I have some extra fan belts if you need one when you roll through Alabama.

I assume that everyone here gets how totally cool this thread is? A guy is making a journey across the country in an ancient Corvair RV and a bunch of experts are along for the ride - virtually - through technology. And solving problems in real time as they occur. Matt..."is broken down on the side of the roadway just north of St Louis. Starter issues. Anyone in that area who might pop out a

Looks like I have a leaky Governor seal. Starttwire was corroded so I fixed it. I have another slow day headed to my parents in Centralia,Illinois. Then leave for Jacksonville on Friday morning. Here's the van on ramps in a big storm we had today.

I constantly monitored the fluids. The transmission works great. Has a clarks pan on it. Not sure about a longer pickup tube. I'll get the Lucas stuff and take it easy the rest of the trip.

The trans holds 12 qts. or so.. When warm and idling nothing will show on the dipstick if it is 1-1/2 qts. low... Find some TransX or Lucas Auto trans sealer and drive on... Only worry if as you take off from a quick stop it jerks, or slips [ flairs ] as you round a sharp corner.. To find the leak... Cool engine Spray trans with BRAKE Cleaner liberally.... then watch...

It's hard to say because it looks like it empty. I add some and it seems to come out when I drive.

Always better to find and fix the problem. No need to oil down the highways, unless you are on a dirt road! :D
