A simple mechanics stethoscope will help isolate the noise from the crankcase to the head area and one cylinder to another. That would be the next thing I would do to try to find the noise. Also while running check each valve with valve covers off using the stethoscope. Old school is a long screwdriver to the ear or other metal rod. But I spent $6 or 9 quid on the proper tool! Another vote to avoid copper lines! I have witnessed too many home fix's over the years with copper tubing and breakage. The last one was a FC brought to my house for minor repairs a couple years ago.. and there was a nice fine mist of fuel spraying over the engine from the left carburetor "home made copper" fuel line. I don't believe this is a indication of overheating per-say. Most of the older high mile heads I have seen have a low spot as said above. My 1964 Van heads have over 225,000 miles on them from new. They had new guides and seats put in quite a while ago. The valve cover rail on the bottom by the push rod tubes was really warped. The machine shop said the whole heads was warped.... wrong!!! I

Goop.... really... the stuff dries to a clear hard rubber like material. I have used this "Goop" adhesive for zillions of things and it can be applied so none of it shows. Can also handle outdoors exposure.

Two hammers... one pounders work well. Hit the center link on both sides of the idler stud at the same time. May take some practice blows to hit both at same time. It is a pinching-shock that will free the nestiest idlers or tie rod ends. Oh... be sure the castle nut is in place but vary loose. This will protect the threads if you miss with a hammer! Yep... gas shocks from the 70's Dodge. I use KYB heavy duty all around for the Vans. On the Rampside Heavy duty rear and standard duty up front. Seems to work better for ride in the pickup's. 34 years and 230,000 miles in my van and have only had to replace two of them. Valveeta get's driven a bit!

I have a couple vary good used ones. I also have a NOS in the box 12 plate oil cooler. I consider it as a near worthless NOS part because once it is used, it is the same os the other used ones I and lot's of others have. So it's new but no one can use it!! Ha!

I have installed a lot of new fan bearings and remember the same problem you mention. I solved this some 28 years ago by putting a couple small drops of locktight on the bearing shaft going into the aluminum top cover.
