Hey guys, If I go through with this mod it will be for a sand rail application on the street as well as offroad. I plan on using a vw transmission as well.

Hello all, Would tri-ported heads with a centermount carb be a good mod for a stock 140 engine? Are other performance upgrades needed to "balance" the performance? Does anyone have any step by step pictures/instructions for a do-it-yourself application?

Does anyone have experience or know what would happen if I mounted a holley 390 to the manifold in the picture? Notice the manifold is for a two barrel carb. I have an adapter plate that would mount the 390 onto the manifold. How would the flow work with this set up?

I just want to get the sand rail on the road. I've been working on this project off and on since high school, so about 5 years now. I have a parts motor that I plan on building up and I will most likely put a reverse rotation set up in that and run a rear engine IRS configuration.

Thanks for the response Steve, So it seems I will have the same wear issues that I would have if the ring gear was reversed?

I don't plan on running reverse rotation for this buggy project. I need some clarification though. If i turn the motor and trans around in a mid engine set up, do I still have to reverse the ring gear or am I ready to go? Correct me if I'm wrong about how I'm thinking about this: 1. To run a corvair and vw trans in standard configuration (trans up front and motor in back) the motor must

I've read that corvairs typically run better and are designed for premium gas, but all the registered premium brands around me are ethanol gasoline. Would I be better off using 87 ethanol free gas, the premium 93 or the unregistered 91 octane ethanol free gas that is sold at a reputable marine gas station? Asking for a friend.

Hello all, I've been doing some reading on the center mount single carb option, and it seems clear that a holley 390 is still a bit too big for my corvair 140. The other problem is that there is a gap in throttle response due to the long runners. I believe this is due to there being too much and not enough fuel. I haven't done any testing of the following theory and I was hoping to get so

So the angular exhaust involves fabricating the exhaust ports on the heads? That's interesting. I have some buggy headers I planned on using. I don't really want to play around with my heads other than maybe doing tri-port

I have a manifold just like that one, but mine has the oil warmer for it. I just pulled that off the internet so that everyone could understand what I meant by 4 leg 2bbl. I might consider grinding it, but that would also mean I would need to grind the adapter because the adapter has the same shape as the intake hole. Starr Cooke says this kind of manifold is his favorite and that they run wel

Jim, this is the manifold I'm talking about Holley makes an adapter where you can bolt a 4bbl carb up to that.

Swingaxle, I'm going to use the ring and pinion gear from an irs and use a swing axle differential.

j3m, I appreciate the suggestion and will consider it. It's a little pricey though. That might be an upgrade for a later time, but I'm going to try to make due with what I have. JimBrandberg, I have received the same advice from many others as well. My complication is that all my manifolds are the 4 runner for the 140 but the middle connecting piece that the carb mounts on is 2bbl. Holley make

The main issue with reverse rotation is that its more money I would need to spend and I have a frame that's adapted for mid-engine, so I would need another frame if I were to switch out the motors. Maybe I can make the rear piece of the frame removable so that I could use both. Not sure how that would work.

Well I'm always in the market to buy a 140 hp motor if the price is reasonable. those motors on ebay for 3000+ is way out of my acceptable range. I'm sure those motors are really nice, but not for what I need.

That way I will not need to machine the 6v case in order for it to fit a 12v flywheel.

I have two IRS, the rest are type 1 swing. I'm going to change out the differential in the IRS and change the side plates and it will basically be a swing axle.
