Well, DAVE, who said he's not mechanically inclined? True, he still does not understand some of the basics of various automotive systems, but has done pretty well fixing up Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin rowin4 Wrote:

Say what? Come on, you know you want to... Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin So, my kid offered to do some work on my car. Great, right???
He has a garage that will hold 3 cars. I loan him my floor jack, creeper and a bunch of tools. So, he replaces the steering rack. Great! I could not find a new clutch cable, so I have him grease old one and put it back in.
He wants to deliver the car, but never shows up. Then he calls and says it won't start. Oh, by the way, Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin Those are pretty cool! Any idea when Mattel started making those? I collected Matchbox and Hot Wheels as a kid, never saw these. Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin If it's still intact after you pull it out, you could patch the cracks by gluing pieces of inner tube on the back side using black polyurethane caulk. Why not? Most people's taste in automobiles (and music!) is nearly always directly linked to what they were exposed to/enjoyed during their youth. Also, people often develop an app Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin Nice job on those mounts, Dann!
When I replaced the front bench seat in my old '68 coupe with some newer bucket seats, I had to fabricate the center-rear mount that was left out by the factory (not needed for bench seat), using crude methods (excuse the terrible welds): Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin When I replaced the clutch on my '68, I didn't take a photo of the new input shaft seal, but it's Clark's part #C495 for 1964-69. 1963 had the highest production numbers for cars (254,571 cars), 1961 had highest n Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin The last time I replaced the pan gasket on a Corvair (it had a finned aluminum pan), I used cork gasket and aviation sealant. That was 2.5 years ago, and I has not leaked any oil since then. I'd recommend this combination for the valve covers too.
The aviation sealant also works well with paper gaskets. It is thin like gasket shellac, provides a great seal, does not squish into places where Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin I live in a humid/wet are that is largely surrounded by salt water (the Puget Sound), but the salt content in the air is almost zero because there are no waves, and thankfully, they don't salt the roads in Winter. For many years, I've parked many cars outside year-round (almost always with no cover whatsoever), and never had a gas tank "go rusty". While not good for the engine Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin Geez, I'd say this is a good (or great) deal for someone who wants a Crown car! They won't be making any more conversion kits.
If I bought it, I'd...
1. Enjoy driving it!
2. Replace the gross home-made louvers (which would look fine if they had been made correctly) with a stock back glass, and work out a more normal venting solution, probably side vents.
3. Replace or Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin I solved that problem by a) not having an iPod and b) not having a working radio in my car. Result = ZERO distractions! Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin mistertudball Wrote:

Yeah, right! Most cars hav Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin I agree with the others on this one. Judging from the one small photo of your car in your signature, it looks great. If it's in very good condition or better and still has the rest of the Corsa parts (dash pod, emblems, etc.), why not turn your Corsa BACK INTO a Corsa and get a 140 or 180 engine, whichever it originally came with from the factory? Not only will you get the added power you de Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin I live on the West Coast. Every order I've placed with Clark's so far has arrived in 2 or 3 days and has contained the right parts. Always a nice surprise! Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin solo2r Wrote:

Yeah, I briefly considered picking up an XJS very cheap, then sanity returned. Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin Spring-loaded belt tensioners do a great job keeping serpentine belts at the right tension. It stands to reason that adding a spring tensioner with the correct properties to the Corvair would also help keep the tension steady and decrease the possibility of tossing a belt, even if not placed in the optimal position. A great test would be to try on on a Corvair that has a greater tendency to throw Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin bought1 Wrote:

Let's see it! Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin The Mustang looks good, but so does the Corvair. How about telling the wife, "Let's take turns driving each car for a few months, then decide which one we both like better!"? Maybe you will luck out, and she will appreciate each car. People have stopped me to talk about my Corvair(s) many times, often with stories about the one they had, asking questions about it, guessing the year Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago lgoodwin I like to do one thing, make sure it runs, then do the next thing. Makes it a lot easier to troubleshoot. If it cranks fine, it's either fuel delivery or ignition. Pull coil wire, make sure you're getting healthy spark. If OK, check #1 plug for spark. If no spark, check points, etc.
