Aren't most all of the YC Mallory dual point distributors centrifugal advance? I would say its kind of on the rare side to find a Mallory with vacuum control.

Closest set I have NOS I checked 4 are no ring and 2 have the spacer ring ... all 6 are loaded with stock pisons and rings

No spark hmmmm. Check resistance of your coil before tossing it. Which Mallory distributor and whats inside under the cap? Newer unilite Mallory or older YC , converted to pertronix or still dual point?

And a pic of your transaxle there are several bushings available... early trans to early starter Early trans to late starter Late trans to early starter Late trans to late starter Heck once you know what Trans slap a 6V early starter in it with the correct bushing and let it spin fast or go IMI 12v .

The firing order on the stamped shroud doesn't apply if you have the reverse rotation cam which is why I asked what order the spark plug wires on the cap were in... starting with #1 wire going Clockwise around the cap would tell us if a reverse cam had been in use without confusing you with rotating the crank and watching the distributor internals. If you don't have the starter that was in it you must know the ring gear tooth count. Stock early VW starters for 109 were 6v. I'm sure they must have other options for 109 over the IMI as it is popular to go 12v in an early VW ... even then you may end up with the need for the support bushing mentioned above and is usually supplied along with the new starter.

If he truly has 109 he needs the early VW starter pretty sure 68-9 is late 130 tooth ring gear .... the pic Matt posted is a great unit that doesn't rely on the starter bushing that is pressed into the starter opening of the transaxle.... this is where the IMI high torque starter is a value being 12v and self supporting and correct for early VW ring gear.... possibly take the starter that

Yep turned in 4 grey ones for 4 new red ones yesterday .. our SDCC newsletter producer John sent it out right away... dang I was just under a Silverado swapping a front diff out last month lets just say we almost shook that truck off the stands let alone this recall GEEEEEZZZZZZZ. We are using modis and it also has a lab scope which is cool. If I was going to purchase new i would look at the OTC. They are all good but if you want to use it for work you need the network subscription or fasttrack to do some damage.
