At sometime in the past I think the car has taken a hit on the left front as the lower half of the left front fender from just below the belt line has been replaced. If i were to cut the coil on the right side I assume it is best to take it off the top of the spring, correct? Forum: Corvair Center Forum 3 years ago lowandslow My '63 has always had a tilt to the drivers side of about 3/4 inch as measured at the top of the fender well openings. I replaced the tired rear springs several years ago to correct the rear wheel camber and 2 years ago, replaced the left side front spring only in an attempt to correct the tilt and left the original right front spring in place. However, the car still sags to the driver' Forum: Corvair Center Forum 3 years ago lowandslow I have a friend who has a '62 Spyder who was out driving on Saturday. After having to perform a panic stop was unaware that the left rear brake shoes had locked up. While trying to drive home the wheel became so hot that the tire exploded, all the rubber parts (including the flexible brake line) melted and the brake drum broke into 2 pieces. All that is repairable but my concern is about the Forum: Corvair Center Forum 3 years ago lowandslow Thanks Joel, but from the info gleaned so far and the fact that after 11 years of driving this car with no obvious problem in that area, I think that it's probably ok to go ahead and reinstall the shaft as is. I don't race this car, just drive it around town. It doesn't even have the turbo on it since the previous owner removed it, and with a new clutch and flywheel and the fact th Forum: Corvair Center Forum 3 years ago lowandslow Since the seal in the input shaft is so close to the clutch disk I wouldn't think that that would be affected that much by the slight wobble. I was just worried that there might be something else to be concerned about. What think you? Forum: Corvair Center Forum 3 years ago lowandslow Before reassembling the transaxle on my '63 Spyder after a transmission overhaul (bad 1st and 2nd syncronizers), I checked the transmission inputshaft for straightness and found it to be slightly bent showing about .020 out of true measured at the center of the shaft. Apparently it has been this way for the 11 years I have been driving it. I normally put about 1,000 miles a year on it and ha Forum: Corvair Center Forum 4 years ago lowandslow Ok, but I'm wondering why on the 3 speed but not on the 4? I'm also wondering if this might be a differential originally from a 3 speed, and if this is a 3:55 differential? the numbers cast in to the case are:

(Or 11282-hard to tell) Forum: Corvair Center Forum 4 years ago lowandslow I had the 4 speed transmission on my 1963 Spyder overhauled and the shop also inspected the differential and installed new seals. They had a question about the split washer in front of the seal in the nose, saying that they couldn't find a mention of it in the manual I supplied them, but they reinstalled it with the new seal anyway. I looked at both the sectional and exploded views where it Forum: Corvair Center Forum 5 years ago lowandslow Thands Matt. There is an upcoming NTCA event in Mineral Wells that may be a source but I still would like to have a list of other cars wheels that would work. Forum: Corvair Center Forum 5 years ago lowandslow I'm in need of a 13 inch wheel for a spare tire in the Fort Worth area. if anyone has one available locally email me at patrickmcghee@sbcglobal.net. failing that, can anyone supply me with a list of wheels that will fit and can be found at a auto recycler?

Forum: Corvair Center Forum 6 years ago lowandslow I heard a story that the air cooled Chevrolets than Chevy recalled due to the Franklin lawsuit threat had been loaded on a barge and dumped into Oakland Bay. I understand that 2 got away, one to the Ford Museum in Dearborn and one in a private collection. Forum: Corvair Center Forum 6 years ago lowandslow I towed my '63 convertible backwards 1300 miles on a tow dolly and the rear window kept blowing in, so I stopped at a home depot and bought a tarp and bungee cords to cover the top and had no more trouble. Forum: Corvair Center Forum 6 years ago lowandslow Thanks, guys. California Corvairs says they have used ones so I ordered one and some other carb parts. Forum: Corvair Center Forum 6 years ago lowandslow 21. Filter screen In working on a friend's '62 Spyder I found that the little bronze filter screen in the top of the carb where the fuel line plugs in is missing. Clark's doesn't seem to carry that item so I'm wondering if anyone has one to sell or knows where I can obtain one? Forum: Corvair Center Forum 6 years ago lowandslow I'm working on a friend's '62 Spyder I overhauled the carb last summer and the car has been running fine until a couple of weeks ago. His wife was driving it home one day and suddenly it started acting up. It runs fine until you reach about 50 mph, then it won't go any faster. He says it acts like it is flooding above that speed and occasionally backfires. It sounds to me like Forum: Corvair Center Forum 7 years ago lowandslow I towed my '63 Spyder convertible 1300 miles on a dolly (rear wheels up) and the only problem was that the rear window kept blowing in so I bought a tarp to cover the whole top and all went well. Several years earlier I had also towed a '96 Taurus 1500 miles on a dolly (front wheels up) and the only trouble I had was at the Penske rental place when they wouldn't rent me a dolly be Forum: Corvair Center Forum 7 years ago lowandslow My parents lived just outside Hilo on the big Island for 13 years and managed to build a house and live there comfortably on a mailcarrier's and secretary's pensions. Forum: Corvair Center Forum 7 years ago lowandslow Some years ago I saw a brand new Oldsmbile in a shpping center parking lot that had been parked diagonally across 2 spaces to keep people from parking next to it. Someone had keyed it the entire legnth of the car. It had just been done because I could still see the little curl of paint at the end of the scratch. Forum: Corvair Center Forum 7 years ago lowandslow I lived in a condo in Laguna Hills California for 16 years and used to see coyotoes patrolling the steet in the early mornings on trash pickup days. Also saw a couple carrying cats off in their mouths, and could commonly hear them yip-yipping in the evenings off in the distance.
