![]() Corvair Center Results 1 - 30 of 322 9 days ago brentc I'd look at it this way:
If the engine needs cooling at low rpm, for example with A/C or pulling a trailer the folded fin probably would be more efficient at doing a good job at cooling a low flow of oil very well.
If the engine is needing good cooling at elevated rpm like very fast desert driving or a turbocharged engine, perhaps less cooling efficiency but greater flow in the 12 plat Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 days ago brentc From memory, the folded fin and 12 plate have similar cooling. The folded fin and eight plate have similar flow.
The essence is the 12 plate cools a large amount of oil slightly inefficiently and the folded fin cools a small amount very well, for roughly the same outcome.
The eight plate is pretty adequate overall though.
There's some data in Bob Helt's CORSA article "The Forum: Corvair Center Forum 19 days ago brentc Generally a good starting point is disconnect the secondaries and figure out what really is best running just on the primaries. Then jet the secondaries three sizes leaner. Often this means you can use the former primary jets in the secondaries.
The Power Enrichment system in 1965-67 engines is seldom activated in 140 engines so you can err a little heavy for fuel.
Most 140 secondaries exce Forum: Corvair Center Forum 27 days ago brentc I vote no ventshades, real ugly junk! Right up there with passengers side mirror for the nursing home look.
Brent Forum: Corvair Center Forum 5 weeks ago brentc I'd sure enjoy seeing any information or illustrations of them you might have convenient, Mark.
As to putting the Pontiac ones on I think it looks quite straightforward. Probably would look great with 6.95-14 tires!
Brent Forum: Corvair Center Forum 5 weeks ago brentc A very similar wheel was under development for a 1966 Corvair option. The CORSA Museum has an exhibit I think, they resemble the mag wheel covers a bit.
Brent Forum: Corvair Center Forum 5 weeks ago brentc You will just need a late flexplate and bellhousing. The flexplate can be identified by an extra hole in the bolt circle. They are very plentiful and I'd be surprised if someone wouldn't just give you one. Do you have a local club?
Brent Forum: Corvair Center Forum 7 weeks ago brentc I drove a 1964 500 coupe that had Pirelli P77 205-70/13 and they were tight but did fit pretty good. May vary with tire brand a little. It did kind of skate around in rainy weather.
X11 in 1980 and F41 option X cars used 205-70/13. They started drying up late 1980s.
Brent Forum: Corvair Center Forum 7 weeks ago brentc Looks very tidy. I would think about making a tin baffle or guard that sits at the forward edge atop the chassis rail around 14"(?) square to cover everything to prevent road debris from potentially snagging the looped hose, and yanking it apart, if you run over something weird on the freeway.
Edit: upon closer examination is see you have a clear plastic cover for that purpose, looks good Forum: Corvair Center Forum 2 months ago brentc I feel faint. I have to buy one of these for a concours project '66 a/c Corsa convertible.
It actually had a nearly perfect factory mirror on it when I acquired it but the head fell off first time it got transported.
If anybody has a mirror head or pedestal outwards pieces I'm looking.
Brent Forum: Corvair Center Forum 2 months ago brentc Our 1977 3+3 454 was our GM demonstrator at the time. It got 15 mpg and we ended up buying it because we thought we'd never find another truck with that kind of economy!
Still have it.
Brent Forum: Corvair Center Forum 2 months ago brentc There were no factory big block 4wd 1970s suburbans.
There may be a few around that were converted but it would be an interesting mix of parts.
2wd, no problem. Much later there was 4wd 454 availible but closer to 1990.
Brent Forum: Corvair Center Forum 3 months ago brentc I think I would start by checking that the fuel pump hasn't worked it's retaining bolt loose and slid up.
I offhand can't visualize a situation inside a Powerglide that would lock it to the engine approaching a stop.
Brent Forum: Corvair Center Forum 3 months ago brentc On Powerglides, the shift is timed very carefully to just release low band at the very instant the high clutch can handle the power. If both overlap in engagement it's a bumpy shift, if low releases a little early it flares.
All good suggestions above, but I'd suspect low bands a trifle loose. For a preliminary test, set the parking brake and apply the service brake with the engine i Forum: Corvair Center Forum 3 months ago brentc The car will also pull towards the side with the least caster. You may be able to add a little on the drivers side by adjusting the nuts forwards and trying it out. Or backing the passengers side ones rearward a bit. The rear nut at the bushing is usually a locking one and quite tight.
Brent Forum: Corvair Center Forum 4 months ago brentc I'd just honed out 110 style exhaust manifolds to fit 140 stacks, when I wanted to try this out. Then a stock 110hp type GM exhaust for the rest.
I really, really liked it! Very quiet, no more droopy mufflers and same top speed, doesn't seem to be restrictive. I definitely get the impression from the GM literature the 1965 duals were a very last minute addition.
I'm sure a f Forum: Corvair Center Forum 4 months ago brentc In a pinch you can swap 4th for 2nd to get a few years out of it.
Brent Forum: Corvair Center Forum 4 months ago brentc Don't read too much into plug or tailpipe colour, it's meaningless on unleaded gas nearly.
Brent Forum: Corvair Center Forum 4 months ago brentc I actually borrowed from Shell head office in Calgary the Shell 4000 films and screened them for the local Corvair guys on a projector in 1991 at a meeting.
Best part was when they showed the drivers having breakfast at the cafe in Saskatchewan, the entire audience groaned seeing the closeup of the eggs fried in bacon fat!
Brent Forum: Corvair Center Forum 5 months ago brentc These are a very nice spring in non convertibles if you want an "Aristocratic" as Ken Hand so perfectly describes it front ride height and better matched for radial ply tires.
Brent Forum: Corvair Center Forum 5 months ago brentc I'd add, vendor is sort of a junk dealer, registration is a little shady on it. Buyer beware. Forum: Corvair Center Forum 5 months ago brentc I've spoken to this guy but deflected making an offer.
Pretty rare model, looks fixable but what a project! Forum: Corvair Center Forum 5 months ago brentc Don't let it ping or knock.
They won't crack without pre ignition or spark knock.
Brent Forum: Corvair Center Forum 5 months ago brentc 66 tele is a different column. The '65 tele column also requires the '65 tele only box. The '66 tele does not use a special box.
You may have a '65 tele column and missing the matching box perhaps?
Brent Forum: Corvair Center Forum 5 months ago brentc You might want to see if it's just water in the gas. Start it up without the air filter and cross over, rev to around 2500 rpm and put the palm of your hand on the top of the carb bore for a second or two, them try the same on the opposite carb. See if it's better.
Brent Forum: Corvair Center Forum 5 months ago brentc What wonderful pictures!
Congratulations and all the best to you both,
