The end play is a major factor on how the early and late trans shift, GM use to offer different thickness snap rings. There no longer available, but you can play around with different bearings, shims and tighten up the end play, the factory spec for the late is .005 too. The different size shims and dimensions are on the saginaw blue prints. Its very important. Mike

Back in the 70s and 80s racing oil was free, i use to get Valvoline or Pennzoil. Always ran straght 50 weight as most others, muligrade was VooDoo back then in a race car. Never had any oil related failures, actually would reuse the bearings many times when freshening up the motors,Me and James Reeve talked about this and he said he ran straight 50wt in his Stinger, Just Saying :) Mike

A mobil 1 engineer came to mercedes when i was working there to look at sludge problems we had in 99. Basically the change intervals were too long with conventional oils causing sludging. He also said if you have an engine failure its not the oil. He said all the major engine oils today are excellent. Providing you use the proper for flat tappets. He did say that adding any type of additive upset

The 64/65 are really nice transmissions. For a street driven not raced i wouldnt worry to much about spares either, like steve says. Mike

Ive pretty much tried every master cyl size. The best combo i found on my 68 was the stock 7/8 bore master with the std bore GM calipers. A very inexpensive soft metalic pad gave great initial feel and good overall stopping power with our light front ends. A high performance pad just doesnt work well for street driving.

I have a set of Carbo Techs custom Metalic linings for the 64 Racer. The Guy at Carbo says these linings are superior to the old GM. I know the Chrome Bumper Vintage Nascar Guys use them and they have no Problem slowing Down those 4000 lb sleds. Ken Hand uses them on his Stinger racer on all 4 corners and has no issues. As soon as i get the 64 out i can give some feedback. Mike

Back in the 80s McIntosh (430 Buick Crown V8 Racer) was working for London Taxi here in Atlanta. The Cabbies were burning up brake shoes as fast as they could replace them so McIntosh emptied the warehouses of all the GM metallics. I remember seeing stacks of brake boxes at least 250 or more. So thats were all the fronts for a Corvair went :( Mike

The question lingers, since the original 100 window stickers have the Vin and the YS number and you have a original body with the correct Vin and someone else has the tag on another body ?? Anyone know of this scenerio ?? I think one of Spences cars is a yenko vin but the tag is on another body ?? Mike

Just for fun i mixed two quarts of Pennzoil Syncromesh with 2 quarts of 75/90 GL5 3 years ago on my everyday driver 64 Monza, Probably 10,000 miles now, Shifts great, the syncros havent exploded !! 66vairman, your friend that ran the Redline NS had a mechanical failure, Not from the NS. The Only TWO gear oils that kept the Syncro rings and Posi plates alive in my V8 Racer was Swepco 201 and Redl

With a Stock exhaust Valve a properly ported exhaust will flow as good or better than a 1 1/2 slant tube. The exhaust is going to get out so choose wisely on your Header diameter and Length to promote scavanging. Pay attention to the intake log, thats where the biggest restriction is. Big Bore carbs dont do much if you dont fix the Log, Raise the ceiling and extend the log past the outer ports so

The John Deere is the lightest and draws little HP. So Far it has held up to Michael LeVeques 7500 rpm redline. Not good for street use as its onlyabout 20 amps. Mike
