I, too, am interested in more information about the procedure. My convertible is much too far gone to save, but I continue to drive it and something like this might keep it on the road a little bit longer.

Replacing my fuel sender and I set the old one next to the new one. I can't tell the two apart and I don't remember which on is which Hopefully I put the right one in. In all seriousness, though, after years of Corvair driving without a working gas gauge it is a treat to have one. Now I don't have to remember how many miles I have left before I need to get more gas.

Took my 69 skiing last week. The car did great up and down the mountain, but the problem was I left the headlights on all day and had to get a jump. Oops.

I've been thinking about subframe connectors for this car. Are there any reasons why this would be a bad solution? This is pretty much what I have in mind: LM Convert Subframe Connectors

It wasn't today, but it was recent. I got some Testors model enamel and tried to spruce up the engine emblem. Also the tailgate emblem on my El Camino. I gotta say: coloring in the lines is hard! I figured since the rest of the car is blue I ought to put a different color on the front emblem. I went for orange because I was thinking of Chevy engine paint, but I think I should have don

Dave, that test sounds terrifying, haha. I have not tried it yet. The current plan for the car is just continue to drive it, but not drop big money on anything. If someone comes along who just HAS to have one of the 500-something '69 convertibles, then they can buy it and rotisserie it and make it fresh again. Otherwise I'll just continue to drive it, take care of it, and hope that

I finally got around to snapping some photos of the bottom of the convertible. The driver's side floor isn't so bad: This is the worst bit of the driver's side rocker, but who knows what the bondo/rust situation is like under the paint: This is on the driver's side. There should be a seam here, but it has been bondo'd over and there are a few other obvious bondo

I took the Corvair for a drive today. The copious smoke I observed before seems to be mostly gone, but I still followed Steve's recommendation and went to a carwash and sprayed some soapy water at the engine from the rear doors and from the blower fan to try and clean all the oil out. I, of course, waited for engine to cool before spraying it with water. It must have just been residue from h

Thanks for the responses everyone. I'll be out of town for the following week, so won't get to do anything to the Corvair. Once I'm back I will clean the engine, then try to get some miles on it and monitor what happens.

The engine is a 110hp. Hopefully have not cooked the engine - it runs just fine now: doesn't feel low on power and doesn't smoke from the tailpipe.

Howdy. Last week I was driving around and my fan bearing seized up. I did not actually stop until the belt snapped and the light came on, so it possibly could have been driven a bit with the fan seized and the belt just slipping (I do think I smelled some rubber). I'm guessing anywhere from a few hundred feet without the fan, or maybe up to a mile. I removed the top crankcase cover and w

Howdy. Last month I got my second Corvair, a 1969 Corvertible. I have since gotten it running and driven it from Wisconsin to Colorado. At first glance the body and interior look pretty great, but the undercarriage terrifies me. It was originally sold in Chicago and I bought it in Wisconsin, so one can confidently assume it's spent most of it's life in the salty midwest. What are some r

I'd love to stop by your shop sometime anyways! There are things I don't miss about living in California, but one thing I do miss is having a local Corvair expert in town for the jobs I couldn't handle myself.

I am missing CU403. Even though I had the Clarks catalog in my hand earlier today I didn't even think to check in there. Oops. I guess I'll disable the fast idle cam for now to make it drivable, until I order the part from Clarks.

Hi there. I'm working on getting a recently acquired Corvair on the road. I've noticed that the fast idle cam likes to stay engaged and I've also noticed that both carbs lack any sort of linkage connecting to their fast idle cams. I feel like trying to find an actual replacement would not be worth the time/money/delivery hassle, so what are some ways I could make a linkage. Seems s

Finally got the Corvair on the road for the first time since getting this one ('69 'vert)! Took her down to Carquest and Kwik Trip (gas station) and back. She runs kinda poorly, but she runs! Next to smooth everything out. Also made a bracket out of an old mower blade to fix a rusted out passenger seat mount.

Thanks for the tips everybody. What eventually did get the rear wheel cylinders off was the torch and, of course, the BFH.

I've taken a break from that rear right one and moved on for now. The front ones were little trouble. One required me to use a torch; the other just came off easy. They also looked like they had been replaced more recently. Now I'm to the rear left and it is just a stuck as rear right. Heat didn't do the trick, so I'm going to try a chisel or Dremel next. While I'm at

I have a Corvair again I'm in the process of getting it roadworthy, part of which includes brakes. I'm having a real hard time removing the bolts that hold on the wheel cylinder(s). So far I've only tried the rear, right one. I remember this giving me trouble on my last Corvair, but I don't remember what tricks I used. Also, the last car was a SoCal car and this one is a Chi

So I ended up taking it to that Gardena Bear Alignment. I would bring it there again. Good price and the car handles fine. The guy advised me that it would ride a whole lot better if I replace ALL of the old bushings front and rear, but I was just trying to get it back on the road after hitting a curb and bending a control arm and busting some of my control arm bushings.

I was hoping someone could point me towards an alignment shop that will do these cars. I am located in Long Beach, California. If it matters: I'm looking to get a front end alignment after I replace my control arm bushings. Side question: the steering has been loose ever since getting the car, is there anything down there I should inspect or adjust?

While I do not have experience with Corvair EFI, either DIY or premade kit, I did switch a 327 from carb to EFI and it was a GREAT decision. Made it way more better for daily driving, even with a big cam. As far as likelihood of a fire goes, I would imagine a properly installed electric high-pressure fuel pump would be far LESS likely to leak and spew gasoline all over your engine bay than a sto

So, to update you all: Easter weekend I got some work done on the Corvair. The engine had a pulley, rather than harmonic balancer. So I installed a harmonic balancer sourced from Greg Petersen. It was my first time dropping a Corvair engine and it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected! I just dropped the back 4 or 5 inches so I could get the pulley off; did not remove the engine. While I was a

I replaced the hose between the crossover pipe and carb/intake manifold. I have ordered and received a new vacuum modulator, rocker arm nuts, and a compression tester. I have not had shifting issues, but perhaps my vacuum modulator has a leak is letting ATF into the manifold and making the smoke. I'm not confident this is the issue since only one side is affected, but I am going to replace
