Very interesting.....now I really don't see the point of shimming the spring. You really never know what you'll find and of course never know why it's in there. Once I got deep in it was clearly poorly maintained in it's later years at least. Once again I appreciate the info.

Guys...Guys! I inadvertently seem to have stirred up a rat's nest... Ok, first of all I have learned that what looked like the remains of a flanged bearing half was not. In my defense I did include verbiage such as "looks like" and "I have no evidence " Next, oil was changed after purchase, following about 8 months of car being stored and when I installed a new John sw

I'm no expert either, one half of one bearing squeezed out on the cap half only? The transition from the flat of the bearing to the flange( if it is a flange)runs the full length and looks to perfect to be just smashed out. However I'm open to any explanation

So I am finally making progress on my 64 Vert....got the powerpack pulled....engine on a stand and started tearing her down. I knew I had a rod knock in #6. The engine was purchased as a used good engine by PO. I have know idea of the history other than what I was told....good used freshened up re-sealed 65 110. I maybe drove the car 500 miles since purchase ...oil changed 3 times...Rotella 10-30

Question for you guys.... Why not pull engine only? It would be nice to be able to roll the car if needed.

Going to need crank turned, at least one rod(#6) bearings etc. Compression is really good and even, so maybe just a re-ring, guide seals etc(assuming no other issues)

Hmmm, I guess if the crank and rod look ok..... even if I get some top down time in, what's the harm? Already broken... I am going to pull the top stuff off and see how she looks.

Sorry it took so long boys, but I was dealing with a bout of cellulitis (not fun). Anyway after Eliminating everything else I could think of.... I dropped the oil pan and was greeted with bits of rod bearing. Not what I was hoping for . So, I guess I'm sourcing something else and/or rebuilding what I have. Thanks again for everyone's input.

Only had time for a compression test today....no smoking gun...#1 was at 130 and the other 5 were 140. The noise does seem to be focused on that left side so next thing is to pull the valve cover and check for full return on the valves. I'm going to try to get some time in the garage tomorrow, and once again will post what I see.

Sorry men, busy week.... I hope to dive in a little more today but can share the following....no change with clutch pedal at all....does not get louder with load...does get somewhat louder with rpm. Now what might be the best clue....exhaust smells odd...burns the eyes...I'm now thinking I got a half tank of some wildly high alcohol content crap and lost valve seat/seats. I did purchase fuel
