It's kinda fleeting as the revs are getting up there but even with the stock 3.55's it boosted in first. I'm running 3.08's now and that loads the engine more which gets one the beloved boost. I'm not the original owner, so who knows if my turbo has been massaged a bit. Forum: Corvair Center Forum 7 years ago jimster1 I'd do the Chrysler Sebring seats. Installed seats, both front and rear in my '66 Turbovert. Nice seats and you get shoulder belts in the rear as well. Saves about 80 pounds as well. A few extra ponies on the cheap. Pix if you are interested.
Jim Forum: Corvair Center Forum 8 years ago jimster1 Who sells these kits and what is included. Have I slept through something? Forum: Corvair Center Forum 8 years ago jimster1 When I was re-doing my turbovert's dash with VDO gauges, I made up a circuit that would sound a piezo buzzer in the event of a belt break or oil pressure loss. I'd already installed the oil pressure switch with both normally open and normally closed contacts. I use 12V. from the switch as soon as there is oil pressure to go to one side of the piezo screecher. The other side of the sc Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago jimster1 The middle contact is at ground with no oil pressure. This lights the idiot light. The two outer prongs have continuity between them when you have oil pressure. Commonly used to operate an electric fuel pump.
Jim '66 turbovert Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago jimster1 I concluded that in a convertible with the top down, you can't see the warning lights. I made a simple circuit that sounds a very annoying piezo buzzer when either the fan/gen or the oil pressure light comes on. Cheap insurance, especally oil pressure. Its loss kills the engine really fast....a matter of seconds.
Jim Forum: Corvair Center Forum 9 years ago jimster1 Check with Seth Emerson @silicon wire systems, he's a dealer and has all the additional goodies such as shaft couplers etc.
Jim Forum: Corvair Center Forum 10 years ago jimster1 I have it in my '69 Cadillac and my '90 Ford van. Both blow ice cold. It's easy stuff to use. Don't let the "It's a hydrocarbon and dangerous" folks try to scare you. The A/C has only a couple of ounces while your gas tank holds many gallons of hydrocarbons with a much higher energy density. I'm going to use it in the A/C in my '66 Turbovert as soo Forum: Corvair Center Forum 10 years ago jimster1 I'm not the reason the P.O. is going broke. They are. For a starter, why don't they charge actual delivery cost on junk mail. Why do these guys get their stuff delivered below cost and expect us to make up the difference. Forum: Corvair Center Forum 10 years ago jimster1 Costo has a pretty nice one by Kamenstein. It's good for ten pounds, which takes care of 95% of my ebay shipping. BTW, I discovered that the P.O. pretty much doesn't weigh their click 'n ship packages. I routinely round down a pound of so and never had one come back. I even used the wrong flat rate once and it sailed through. Forum: Corvair Center Forum 10 years ago jimster1 I'll try to correct a mis-conception. not all Sebring seats require the installation of the "brain box" which is essentially an accelerometer that senses g-force and locks the belts. This was used in only the early Sebrings. Later Sebrings use inertial reels for all seats, front and back. Much simpler and I'd thing more reliable. The brain box is a real PITA to install as Forum: Corvair Center Forum 10 years ago jimster1 I'd like to add a vote for the Sebring seats. Not only do the front seats give you an integrated shoulder belt, but the rear seats install easily and likewise give shoulder belts for the back seat drivers. A side issue is the Sebring seat weigh next to nothing while the stock seats are very heavy. Loosing weight is the cheapest horsepower you can buy. Got pix if you are interested. Forum: Corvair Center Forum 10 years ago jimster1 I've got two bass shakers mounted to the floor between the seats, amp in the back under the back seat. Works great. Among my cars, my turbovert has the best sounding tunes.
Jim Forum: Corvair Center Forum 10 years ago jimster1 Check with Mel at the Vair-Mart in San jose. He can probably fix you up. That's where my body man started after I rear ended a guy. Get a straight hood from Mel and aligned everything else to it. At last report the phone is 408-267-8164.
Jim Forum: Corvair Center Forum 10 years ago jimster1 My palms sweat with anticipation. The T-5 seems to finally be sorted, awaiting an infusion of $$$. On the flip side, what is the practicality of fabbing an install kit for the 915?
Jim Turbovert w\3:08's Forum: Corvair Center Forum 10 years ago jimster1 So far, everything everyone has said is good, but.....There is a tiny thrust bearing that takes the load of turning the big gear. It has a number of 1\16" balls and if these are trashed, the box will bind. The thrust bearing itself is a non standard size and thus unobtainable. However, I replaced the balls in the race and now both gear boxes run smooth as silk. I had to buy 200 of the li Forum: Corvair Center Forum 11 years ago jimster1 17. Re: Power Seat ? If you choose wisely, you can even wind up with seats with built in shoulder belts, like Chrysler Sebring convertible seats. I love mine.
Jim Forum: Corvair Center Forum 11 years ago jimster1 You've got all the tools you need on the end of each arm. Push down on the pivot while lifting on the outside of the splined doodad. The spring tension of the wiper kind of cocks the attachment, holding t in place. Pushing on the pivot counteracts this force and lets you slip the arm off.
Jium Forum: Corvair Center Forum 11 years ago jimster1 An additional tip, while you've got the base assembly out giving it the white paint treatment, solder a ground wire to the lamp socket and crimp a "O" terminal onto the other end. When reassembling everything, put the terminal under one of the mounting bolts. Solves the crappy ground problem. A beneficial side effect, is if you need an under-hood light at night, you can unplug t Forum: Corvair Center Forum 11 years ago jimster1 I ran into a guy today who claimed to be a dyed in the wool Corvair fan. His '65 was truly amazing. He got 70 MPG which gave him some decent range on his 4 gallon gas tank which was located under the front seat. It was over 100 in the shade so I said a fond good bye and motored away.
Jim '66 Turbovert Forum: Corvair Center Forum 11 years ago jimster1 The absolute hot set up is the thin wedding band tail light lenses in all four positions with brake and turn signal lighting both lamps. Real back up lamps relocated below the bumper. They actually let you see to back up. what a concept.
Jim, not exactly stock '66 Turbovert Forum: Corvair Center Forum 11 years ago jimster1 22. Electric Choke I've just finished installing an electric choke on the YH in my '66 turbo Corsa. It works really good but I'd like it to work a bit faster. I've got a collection of the bi-metal coils from a variety of chokes. The question is, which will open faster, one with lotsa turns or one with fewer turns in the coil.
Jim, '66 turbovert Forum: Corvair Center Forum 11 years ago jimster1 I've just finished converting the back up lights to a second set tail\stop lights on my '66 Corsa. I intend to mount a real back up light somewhere under the bumper. Are there any suggestions for routing the 12V. wire from the engine room to under the bumper. A quick glance says there is no really good way to do it.
Jim, '66 turbovert Forum: Corvair Center Forum 11 years ago jimster1 Somewhere along the line I realized that I couldn’t see the idiot lights on my Corsa convertible when the top was down. In reality, under the best of conditions, they don’t exactly scream at you. The result being this little circuit. It works like this, First we need some signal that is there only when the engine is running, so I went to a different oil pressure switch. It has two circuit Forum: Corvair Center Forum 11 years ago jimster1 It looks like you are a candidate (after the fact) for a little circuit that I worked up. It involves changing the oil pressure switch and a bit of wiring. The result is a buzzer that shouts at you in the event of loss of oil pressure or belt. PM me with your email address and I'll send you a copy of the schematic and explanation. Idiot lights are bad enough, but in a convertible with th Forum: Corvair Center Forum 12 years ago jimster1 Check with Mel @ The Vair Mart in San Jose. 408-267-8164.
Jim Forum: Corvair Center Forum 12 years ago jimster1 Where is the moderator? This crap has nothing to do with Corvairs. Someone needs to pull the plug on this thread. Quick!!
Jim Forum: Corvair Center Forum 12 years ago jimster1 The power antenna that I used up front came from JCW. The motor is connected to the mast by a long push\pull cable. The motor mounts under the fender. Totally slick. I haven't seen it listed for a while now, I wonder if it's still manufactured.
Jim Forum: Corvair Center Forum 12 years ago jimster1 Hopefully finish the EDIS install and disks on all four corners. With huge amounts of luck, a wastegate before the DCOE and "E" flow turbo go on. Stopin' 'N Goin',
that's the plan.
Jim '66 turbovert Forum: Corvair Center Forum 12 years ago jimster1 In general, three series wheels are not the ones you want. Look for five or seven series wheels. Mine are from a five series and fit with no issues. Be careful with lug nuts though, you need "bulge" nuts.
