OT another Chevy survivor project
Posted by: Mel ()

Bought this 1960 Chevy Impala 20 years ago from Texas,it's a fairly rare Chevrolet built with a 305 horse 348 automatic,,I was going to restore it,,but todays collector car market favours survivor's, so I am going to put in back together as a patinaed survivor and dump it smiling smiley

Lots of fond memories of my Dad's 1959 348 three on the tree El Camino.

I can still see those coolest ever valve covers from when I was just a kid.

But still to this day I prefer the 1960 tail lights, eyebrow trim, and fins.

For a second I thought it was a Toranado with those snow tires on the front.

Mel,

I think you made a smart decision there. Original survivors are the hottest ticket today. Repair what needs to be repaired (like you did the floor) and put all presentable original parts back on as per factory. And document everything as much as possible.

BTW, as a diemaker, I could have helped you blend in the welds so as to look like the floors were never replaced. Best wishes with the car!

And John, love that '58 interior. That is sharp!

If I had the bankroll Bill Harrah had, all those cars could warm my garage any day. grinning smiley

I do not think you will have any problem selling it.It already looks good.

The worse part about restoring an old car these days and I have done 3 from the ground up starting in 1989, is now, way too many China made reproduction parts....even the driver side glass in my 49 Chevy completed 4-5 years ago, is really WAVY and it chips real easy, one reason I would never build another car from the ground up now...and they do not give you Chinese costs, the importers sock it to you...they have no mercy as to robbing you.

They will not refund your money either...they say they will sell you another one for their cost...LOL

A lot of USA made parts get discarded during restoration's and replaced with Chinese JUNK ! they look good but most of the parts don't last sad smiley , nothing beats original smiling smiley

Agreed....100 ++++%....on one of my doors, I used a Chinese made trim piece...I put the orig on and tighened it up...looked good....tightened up the Chinese one and my perfectly straight door is now wrinkled where the bolts and nuts are attached...do you think the IMPORTER CEO will fix my door...LOL...he gets rich, I get wrinkles.

My favorite type of build. At least you can afford the room to take your time.

Got the 348 running today and broke in camshaft, lots more work to do but at least its moving under it's own power, really getting tired pushing it .

I'm generally not a fan of the 1960 Chevy look but, dang! I like that one.

Enjoy the Corvair!

Mel. I’m an hour away from you. If the price is right I’ll take it off your hands. I’ll gladly finish the rest. Lol
