Re: OT-TPMS or Tire Pressure monitoring system

Buy one that is easy to switch sensors. I have 10 sensors 6 on my hauler and 4 on my flatbed. I want to get 4 more for my truck but it is already a pain to delete and add the proper sensors every time I switch from my hauler to my truck & trailer and I don't have to set pressures when I do that. If I bought 4 for my truck I would have to reset the pressure range each time also.
Ideally you would have selectable stored setups for different situations.

Thanks, Joel. Lucky all my trailer tires run 50 psi. It should make it easy to setup for the 3 trailers.

66 Monza has it own system.

Malibu and Silverado have factory systems, so no change there.

Greenbrier is not a long term vehicle for us, so it won't get a system.

Any other Vair would get its own system.

My 2014 Accord doesn't give actual pressures. I'm assuming it compares RPM between the wheels and triggers if one of them is running higher than the others.

Greg:

You are right. It does it by using ABS wheel speed sensor RPMs to calculate the inflation pressure.

Here something I bet you didn't know from the Owners Manual:

The Tire Pressure Monitoring System warns you if it suspects a tire has lost air pressure to a significant degree, with visual warnings on the instrument panel. Any time you inflate, rotate or change one or more of your tires, you need to recalibrate the system.

Looks like lots of cars could have their systems out of calibration, if no one read the manual.

I doubt inflation needs recal

Only one experience... rental car picked up a nail.

Alert let me know.....had the tire plugged on car.... re-inlated and checked pressures the next day.... all was good.

Words Honda lawyers put in Manual to deny warranty, if needed for any reason.

Got a TireMinder A1A with booster & 4 transmitter on order. Best price is etrailer.com $292 and added a pack of 2 brass transmitter for $73.

I have 2 Buicks that use the ABS sensors. If a tire is fairly low and you inflate it or you replace tires you have to reset it. I checked one the other day and all the tires had about 20psi. Computer was happy because they all had similar pressures. Aired them up and it was still happy because they all changed about the same amount.

My "winter car", a '99 Buick, has the simple system that uses ABS speed pulses ( no pressure sensors) Its less trouble prone and all you do to reset it is push a button on the fuse block. I taught my kids to always glance at your tires every time you walk up to the car.

These systems with the wheel sensors are a real pain and expense. I run winter tyres on my BMW so have a spare set of wheels and tyres which all needed sensors. BMW allow you to pair two sets of sensors to the car i.e. one winter one summer. A lot of other manufacturers don't so you have to take the car somewhere to get it programmed, then return again when you swap the wheels over.

What was wrong with the systems that use the ABS sensors to monitor pressure loss?

They only warn you with a huge pressure differential.

What was wrong with just having people BE RESPONSIBLE ADULTS and do things correctly, for themselves?
We have become a world of lazy, irresponsible, let someone else do it, its not my job, it wasn't my fault, Victims!

That's why many of the new safety systems on new cars, like "automatic breaking" and "lane departure warning", are relieving drivers of the responsibility of driving! And when you consider how distracted and irresponsible many drivers already are, that scares me!

Normally I would agree with the comments on all the "safety" garbage regulations. I think TPMS is cool. It's like having an oil pressure gauge or any other useful instrument. If it didn't cost so much and they had aftermarket internal sensors with replacable batteries all my cars would have them.
