Hurricane O/T
Posted by: ken ()
Date: October 10, 2018 03:12AM

OT CAT 4 storm coming to me . I live about 70 miles NW of Panama City . My pole building// garage is strong but it will be tested today. I have the roll up doors blocked so that they won't blow in . I am not worried about the house because it was built to storm code and is brick . I have a Honda generator, gas, and everything else one needs . This will be my first hurricane .Mother Nature beats us up sometimes .

Life will not be good for a while. No electricity for probably a week. If it goes in any east of you it's lots better but if it's west of you it's going to beat you up. Prayers for all affected, hopefully it falls apart soon but this one looks aggressive to me. After the storm traveling just a few miles west should get you to an area where you can find stores open. When Hugo hit us everything was closed for over a week but 100 miles south in Savanah they were hardly touched.

My nephew just posted on Facebook that it's almost 150 sustained winds now according to the hurricane hunter. He's air force so may have connections. Bad storm, close to strongest to ever hit USA.

Any word yet from Ken?
According to the TV in the office, the Hurricane is already through Florida and hammering Georgia now.
Hope you are buttoned down Al, it appears to be heading North EAST right now.
It would be terrible if it shoots back out into the ocean and powers up some more.

Mel:

We are fine, sitting in our RV having a steak dinner parked in the Hillbilly RV Park, Maggie Valley, NC. We have been getting reports from neighbors on situation in our area.

They did want to know how it happens that we are out of town now twice for the hurricanes. Told them we knew the one who controlled the hurricane schedule.

2 years ago we were under a mandatory evacuation order the same weekend of Vairs in the Valley, we were already geared to go, just packed up the house and left out went to the show, came home to down trees and no electricity, it's that time of year.

Don:

That was a bad one for us too. Lost the power pole to the house. Gulfstream took the weekend shift and their families to Atlanta and put us up. Double pay (80 hours exempt) and 26 hours of overtime to keep the Customer Support function operational. Nice check just a few weeks before retirement.

But we got home on Tuesday and no power until Thursday. Had the replacement power pole up and meter/breaker box on by noon Wednesday. Power company said they would restore Wednesday night. Thursday morning and no power. Another call and their response was I was not a priority and they would get to me within a week. Advise them of the special medicine in fridge and they said "Well keep your generator running." So I told them I was calling WTOC about the situation and hung up. Damn, if they didn't show up 3 hours later and hooked us up.

Ken said he was 70 miles NW of Panama City so that puts him on the good side of the storm, probably lost power for a bit. The storm was just downgraded to cat 1, that's good news, looks like it loosing strength fast and really moving fast so that lessens the damage because well it's not there so long.

Al, I'm in the same union as the linemen, work for the power company, helps a little but yes the priority is getting as many restored as possible as quickly as possible so they'll hook you up when they come through as long as you're ready otherwise the cleanup crew will come back when they can. Best to get your stuff ready before they come through.

This time there is no 25 year old pole to be blown over. Just their wires to my service pole. Hopefully the storm track keeps most of the wind west of us. I just hope I can get gas on the way home through the track area. Truck is limited to 140 mile legs with trailer.
