Need window Sticker or info on 1962 with Kelsey Hayes wire wheels
Posted by: ral1963 ()

For 1962, RPO 697 was for Kelsey Hayes wire wheels (changed to RPO P45 for 63 & 64).

Does anyone know if this was a mid year offering that rolled out close to the convertible and Spyder rollout?

Does anyone have any documentation showing the availability of RPO 697 for 62 vairs?

Does anyone have a 62 with Factory original Kelsey Hayes installed?

Ideally I would love to see an original window sticker for a 62 with RPO 697 listed...

Rick,
In his 1962 chapter in "the Corvair Decade" Tony Fiore writes:
...,as well as genuine wire wheels offered after June 1, 1962. Wire Wheels (RPO 697 at $269, were of the "Knock-off hub" type and included tube tires with protective flaps(RPO 1787 at $28.60)"

I've got the 1962 "Finger-Tip Facts" but mine has no updates, so it shows nothing that happened in the later introductions of the Convertible and Spyder options.
My 1962 "Dealer Album" has the same problem - no update pages... sad smiley

They are the rubber thing that protects the tube from the spokes where they poke through the rim.

My guess:
Sheet rubber liner in the inside above the spoke nipples.

Thanks for the response, I know the 62 RPO was listed as an available option for all models except wagons.

One of the reasons I am asking was regarding the necessity of mounting the spare in the trunk on wagons or AC equipt cars. I figured out the wagon question, but now am still curious as to whether or not it could be ordered with an AC car.

I know the spare lock would not work, but can you use the trunk holdown with a KH rim? I don't believe there was any different spare retention parts other than was came with the kh rims.

Thought?

Awhile back I purchased a set of the K-H wheels that had been in storage for a long time. They came with protective flap, rubber "boots" that mounted between the tube and the rim. They extended up beyond the bead area of the rim. The poor guys that had to mount new tires and tubes on them had quite a fight.

Dan,

You state....

"I've got the 1962 "Finger-Tip Facts" but mine has no updates, so it shows nothing that happened in the later introductions of the Convertible and Spyder options.
My 1962 "Dealer Album" has the same problem - no update pages"

So I am to understand the 62 Finger Tip facts and the 62 Dealer album, neither show the KH wheel as an option as they were printed before June of 62.

Do you happen to own the same books for 1963 or 1964? Do they list the Kelsey Hayes rims as being available without restrictions? or do list the option as unavailable if paired with RPO C64 Air Conditioning?

I have a 1963 Chrevrolet dealer album and under Corvair Optional equipment it list the genuine wire wheels with knockoff hubs as being available for all models except greenbriars. Also it lists the deluxe Air conditioning as an option available on all models except Monza Spyders and greenbriars equipped with radio. Hope this helps

Looks like you would need RPO 1787 white wall rayon tires with inner tubes to go with RPO 697.

Interestingly, the RPO before RPO 697 wire wheels is 696, the heavy duty front and rear suspension, released as a mandatory option along with 651 Spyder's other mandatory options: 686 metallic brakes, 693 3.55 rear axle ratio.

Interesting. A bit off topic but I don't see bucket seat trim for the Monza listed here. A 4-door Monza would not have had bucket seats unless you specified that on the order.

Enjoy the Corvair!

Paul,
That was up to the end of 1962 only.
1963 Corvair Monza 4 doors had standard bucket seats just like any other Monza

Thanks Dan,
My comment was regarding the 62 Options. You post with the 63 Options slipped in ahead of mine.
