Clark's 4" Rubber hose for use hose on turbo'd engines?
Posted by: joelsplace ()

I'm thinking maybe the PVC hose doesn't handle heat as well. Is it going to hold up on the right side on a Spyder or Turbo Corsa? The exhaust is really close.
Question 2 - is this hose available at Home Depot or Lowe's? They have a lot of 4" hose.

I have used the plastic hose from Clark’s for the last 30 + years on every Corvair I have worked on.

No issues.

If you are talking about the air hose out of shroud, It is supposed to be on the left side on a turbo engine!

Thanks Frank. That's what I was looking for.

solo2r - only place 4" is used is the heater ducts coming off the lower shrouds.

Is that a symptom of being an old fart like most of us on here are?

Early turbos “fresh air hose” exit right side just like all the other cars and FCs until 1965. It is only about 4 inches long. In 1965 the fresh air hose got really long in the engine compartment and the turbo and AC cars* got the left side exit from the upper shroud.

* discussion going on about 140 AC fresh air exit in another post.

Frank is correct as usual. I wonder why they went away from the early design on the fresh air hose? It worked a lot better and was way easier to install. The airbox side on the LM is a real pain.

Joel- I've not noticed any problems with mine... I agree though, they are darned close to the exhaust in one spot. I'm not running a heat shield either,
there's supposed to be one on that close spot. I keep wanting to make one for it, but since I have not had any problems with not having one, it is low on the priority list. I think the ones I have may have been on since 2004-2005.
I've ruined too many of those stock style fabric kind to count!

I just switched to the PVC ones because I've had so many of the fabric ones die. I hope mine last as long as yours. Mine has a tiny heat shield there.

I put a smear of Syl-Glyde inside the hose so the next guy has a fighting chance of getting it off. It's sort of a pain to remove the duct screws when the hose is stuck.

I know the factory style hose tends to glue to the duct. Does the PVC style also?

Has anyone found reasonable place to buy the 4" heater hose?

I found this hose, but I don't need 25 feet. And I don't know if cutting it up to fit 4 or 5 cars would be as economical as Clark's hose. Might be a better hose BUT.

That will probably be $10/ft shipped vs about $16 for Clark's and even cheaper since you don't waste any. It seems like I waste 10-12" on Clark's.
