Small Racing Alternator

Does anyone have the part number or application to get one of the very small alternators seen on some of the race cars? I see them on the racers facebook page and would like to buy one.

There are several in Summitt and Jegs. I have also seen the small John Deer alternators used. You will have to fab your own mount.

The John Deere is the lightest and draws little HP. So Far it has held up to Michael LeVeques 7500 rpm redline. Not good for street use as its onlyabout 20 amps. Mike

THIS ONE puts out 40 amps and weighs less than 7 pounds. I haven't bought or used one, but might try it on my autocross car.

I don't know how it would work at 7500 rpm though smiling smiley

Thanks, these are good options. They don't care which direction they rotate, do they?

Alternators are an AC producing unit with an internal rectifier and will work in either direction.

Look into Denso 16241. 40A and tiny like the one in the ebay link.

'vairless. But not forever.

Even the small alternators have a fan inside designed to pull/or push air past the rectifiers. They are listed as CW (clockwise) or CCW (counter-clockwise) For racing, it probably doesn't matter. Short races, small loads, etc. For street use, the correct rotation (which is CCW) is important. The power you need, the more heat it will produce and more cooling it will need. One time, lazy old me just installed a pulley - no fan - on an autocross motor using a stock alternator. After autocrossing it a while oneday, after 6 runs, two drivers, you could have fried an egg on the alternator cast housing. Your call.

Ken,

Yes that is my car and the alternator I mentioned above. It works great!!
I have the exact same setup on my backup motor in my trailer.
