OT: 429 Ford stuck rings?
Posted by: joelsplace ()
Date: October 02, 2018 06:19PM

I've got a 1980 C800 Digger Derick that burns 5 quarts of oil in 30 minutes. Mosquitoes beware!
It doesn't smoke when you first start it and I have replaced the valve seals.
It runs good and doesn't foul plugs amazingly enough so I'm thinking the oil rings are stuck.
Is there a good product to free them up? I don't mind filling the cylinders with something and letting it sit for a long time if needed.
I guess I should use an inspection camera to take a look in the cylinders to see what they look like.
The answer should work on Corvairs also!

Or any of the products like PB Blaster. Spray it in and let it soak.

The advantage of Marvel, is that it is okay to mix with your motor oil.
It works good as a "Top-End" cleaner added to your fuel also.
In the past, I used it every time I fueled up one of my Vairs the had pinging issues even with Premium fuel, and after a while, I was able to use the next grade down in gas without pinging. thumbs up

I'd scope the cylinders to make sure they aren't damaged.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to do a compression check to make sure the engine is worth messing with.

Joel, Here's a thread on Marvel "Mystery Oil" that takes some of the mystery about what is in it away.

ATF worked for me when I had stuck rings in my 'vair engine.
I used a bit of air pressure with the cylinders that had valves closed, too.
With your engine you can turn it to TDC and then add your chosen solvent and some air pressure with a "lock" that will prevent the piston from moving down.

I have heard good things about a line of auto service products that are marketed specifically to professional shops. You may want to look into them, ask around,
and if it seems worth the chance, try it out. BG Products Inc. The ERP product seems like maybe the one you would want to try. Hope that may help, never actually tried them myself though.

I've used BG products in the past. Good stuff normally. The EPA killed their EPC many years ago. It was an excellent product.

Ford used to make a product (they probably still do) called Carburetor + combustion chamber cleaner.
It came in an aerosol can and was a thick white foam that you sprayed into the carb. while the engine was running.
Not sure about stuck rings but it sure would clean carbon from the top end of the engine.

Maybe really OT but I like big V-8's.

I like my Corvair mostly because they were always around.

I had a 1962 Monza for a few Years in the 1980's.

Friends and Neighbor's had Corvair's.

My 1960 was given to me by a friend in 1987. and not running, and He passed in 1992. That car been Registered since 1988.
California Renewal fee for this Year is 120.00.

And nothing drives like a Corvair.

429 sounds are requested.

When I worked on the Ranch in 1978 one of the newest vehicles was was a Hay loader with an in-line Ford 6 and a crash box.
Did not use Fourth Gear on the Hay field, It would go about 50 MPH.
I mostly drove a John Deere 2 Cylinder Tractor and a Dump Rake.
Sometimes a Hay Sweeper.

Please keep the phorum included in any progress reports on the 429.

Did you try Marvel Oil? Did it work?

Now I know that Marvel Mystery Oil is not Brake Fluid and ATF, like the rumors.

I have a 1966 Pontiac 421 c.i. engine that is assembled minus Intake and Carb. which I have; just not attached.

And a new starter motor which I have , and a new flexplate.

I would like to find a 1966 Grand Prix, even a Salvaged Car, to put the Motor into and etc.

My 1960 Corvair Driver has a Salvaged Title.

Further OT!!
I Love the 1960s Pontiacs! 1966 was a great year. A friend had a 1966 Catalina 2+2 with the 421 & 4 speed. That was one amazing Muscle Barge! smoking smiley
Hard to believe something that big could go that quickly and handle pretty well too, considering - it ain't no Corvair!

If it has a PCV valve on it, change it. I had a Saturn that drank oil due to a bad PCV valve.

To this day I always have an inventory of BG products on hand.
MTCW - BG Products are the best!
Out of all the years that I have worked as an auto mechanic for different shops - I have had to use what they stocked at the time.
When I learned of BG and started using it at one shop I worked for and seeing the results - I never went back to any of the other products.

I even have the Engine Purge Kits on hand.
What most don't understand when using the Engine Purge Kit - you not only help to free up stuck rings - you also clean up old nasty oil throughout the engine and old carbon build up off the top of the pistons and valves along with cleaning carb passageways or injectors - anywhere the fuel goes through - all at the same time.

Now that's a big bang for your time and money...

Joel,

It sounds like then you should look for a BG distributor or supplier in your area.

Ask for an Engine Purge kit.

An Engine Purge Kit comes with:
One Engine Purge - https://www.bgprod.com/catalog/engine/bg-engine-purge/
Two MOAs - https://www.bgprod.com/catalog/engine/bg-moa/
and One 44K - https://www.bgprod.com/?s=44k

Let me know if you get it. I can teach you the best way to use it along with a way to save it and use it again.
FYI - I've used one kit plus extras for 2 Corvair engines and one lawnmower engine - before I tossed out the purge part of the kit.
