Got my new OPG Corvair catalog today
Posted by: crazyjohnny ()
Date: September 22, 2018 06:55PM

I got the new OPG catalog today. Looked it over some between ball games. Mostly interior, trim, electrical, a general supply. Some body sheet metal. Generic V-8 type items in some areas. A few misses, upper air conditioning duct hose for FC?, lots of water temp gauges but no head temp gauges or oil temp gauges? At least no radiator caps. Some items have a somewhat confusing description, writers not used to air-cooled Corvairs. Prices seem ok. I give it a B- for the effort. A nice try for 1st time. I applaud the effort, competition is always good but I'll stay mostly with Clark's for now. Wish OPG well.

If a Corvair catalog list a water gauge for sale it is a total fail.

Checked tail light prices--about $11 each more than Clark's.
It is an attractive looking catalog though.

Has OPG actually had any Corvair parts custom reproduced or are they only offering parts are currently available? I didn't see any. Clark's has made significant investments in having parts reproduced, and so far I see no reason to purchase from OPG.

With my range of classic vehicles, I think I have purchased from OPG just once out of the thousands I have spent since 2009. They are a bit expensive on their parts or don't have the parts I need.

Yes, I do think competition is healthy in business, but my loyalty will belong to the vendors that have been on board all along.

Try buying a used part from OPG....eye popping smiley

OPG is not geting into Corvairs for any reason other than money.Without Clarks for the last 40 years, not many Corvairs would have been saved.Try buying exact fit seat upholstery or interior door panels from OPG that they (OPG) made in house.Never happen. My money will always go to the vendors that are in the Corvair hobby for real.I guess you can call it customer loyalty.

Another perspective on OPG. Clearly they see a future in Corvairs -- which is good news for all Corvair owners regardless of where we buy our parts.

Not for 5 cents but for a big dollar amount, I have to consider all factors. I do not want loyalty to one vendor affect my decisions. I use Vair vendors first, no matter what the part, then outside if I can't find it within our hobby group.

Right know, I have a $500+ order ready to be placed with Clark's once I confirm a couple of things. Unfortunately, another source for most of the parts is not there to do price matching for the items. If there is, the difference is minimal, so Clark's gets the order due to keeping shipping costs in one place.

I got my catalog and was excited to see that OPG was offering a quick ratio steering arm, page 87 OPG catalog. Question is whether it was a copy of the GM QS arms or copy of an aftermarket modified "quicker arms" sold by others.

If you were going by the published ratio numbers you might be lead to believe that they were same as the OEM GM QS arms. OPG publishes as reducing steering ratio by factor of two.

I compared the OPG arm published photo, pg 86, to my GM QS arms and the shape is very different.

I guess it would be too costly for a new vendor to pony up to make a casting from a real pair of GM QS Vair arms, considering our limited market volume.

Any thoughts on how these might affect Ackermann steering geometry?

I thought it was a great catalog, typical of any large parts supplier. Replacement parts with performance or other options available for those who may not want to stay stock. Parts for the non purist. Cleaners, apparel. Nice to see a large company actually showing interest in our cars.

Clark's $73.55 Probably a few to the west coast guys to get quick delivery, since they are on the west coast.

Finally got mine yesterday. I do like seeing exactly what I am buying but prices seem to be more than our traditional vendors.

The only TRUE way to compare price is if it is made by the same supplier and is identical....otherwise, a part might be made in China vs U.S, Mexico or Canada....then quality vs. price is the factor to consider....they are NOT the same part at that point for price consideration.
