Clutch cable story 03 - My first Clutch Clevis
Posted by: rlp11 ()
Date: September 13, 2018 10:26AM

Well here is my first EM clutch pedal clevis. It was easier to make than I thought. It is just like the OEM version except mine is all Stainless Steel. Now just waiting on the Stainless Balls and I will have everything to make my first cable. Wish me luck.

Your version looks better with the curve for the ball. The end on the factory one looks flat.

Looks good.

How is the LM design coming along? Will you make both LM styles?

You probably already have the balls ordered but I would suggest you get the ones with the sleeve on one end. This protects the cable where it goes through the clevis.

Ken
That is what I have on order. Two sizes, one for EM and one for LM.

Funny you should ask. See pictures

Roger great job! You said that they were easier to make than you thought. Did you make them? If so, in general, how did you do it?

Bending was simple. Start with the hole as the center point then bend the small bends then into my press with the forming dies I made. Now then the forming dies took 2 1/2 days to make. There are three sets in all. Making the rivet took a whole day going from 1/4" round stock to a swedge rivet.

Vairman

I am still in the proto typing stage. I still have to do some destructive testing on the swedge joints. I am swedging with the connections filled with JB-Weld so it should hold real good. We will see.

Roger,
Just was looking at JB Weld products.
They have several types with varying ratings of tensile strength.
The "usual" variety is around 2400 lbs but they have others that range into the 4000+ lbs rating. (don't recall the exact numbers...)
Perhaps other types of epoxy adhesives are even higher.

Roger- that is such a nice piece! heck of a job. I'm glad somebody is finally
fixing the effing early clutch cable problem the right way. Using stainless cable with the proper stranding is going to make those cables last longer than the original GM cables, as the stainless takes care of the corrosion problem.
Corrosion plus bending absolutely kills just about any metal if it goes on long enough... the corrosion causes stress concentrators that cause more stress, the additional stress causes more corrosion and so on until the part breaks. If the original part was designed properly, eliminating the corrosion pretty much eliminates the reason for breakage!

I wouldn't worry about the plastic wrap if you are using quality stainless. The SS shrouds and stays on my sail boat still look like new after many years out in the weather, often times salt water and salt air. The plastic wrap is more like to shred long before marine quality stainless will fail.

Yes, but Sailboat cable are not continuously running back and forth through pulleys.

Just a thought.

Not true for all of the cables. There is a 180 lb galvanized steel center board that is raised and lowered by a pulley system that take much tighter turns than anything on a Vair cable. I can't even imagine how much force is on that cable. If you look at where it attaches to the center board and the amount of pulley reduction. When its on the trailer I let it drop down to a rubber bumper on the trailer to reduce stress. I also have half SS, half dacron line halyards where the SS cable travels over small pulleys in the mast head
