I have several '64s and I'll guess this problem exists on other years also but I just looked at three that were handy.
My Spyder has 1/4" clearance and my convertible and 4-door have none.
Tolerance stack up?
Not enough caster?
Just me?
This has to be noisy. I always assumed it was the springs and never really gave this much thought but metal on metal has to make noise.
By looking at the thread on the 4door vs my Spyder the 4door has less caster. The Spyder is centered. Pictures are both the 4-door.

Caster adjustments look pretty far back on that one.

I agree. Based on the position on the nuts on the brake reaction rods, I'd say you have no positive caster.

It drives good except for the junk steering box. I'll have to check the caster.

I'm pretty sure nothing is bent. The clearance is the same on both sides and I have more than one car just like it.
