Battery Cable Problem! sad smiley
Posted by: oldqmguy ()

In the middle of all the other problems I just discovered a new one! I have purchased a Positive Battery Cable (molded), 4 Gauge Wire with Red Insulation, just the right length for my Monza.

The Battery Post Connector opening is too small (at least for my Battery)!!! eye popping smiley

I took out the bolt and forced it onto the post, then took the 'modified' cable to my vendor, showing him the problem and asking for a similar cable with the 'right' Post Connector. Like a Deer in the Headlights!!!!! The reply, "OK, we sold you the Battery but we only carry generic cables. If it don't fit the Battery we sold you, tough S**t!" I politely told him where he, his boss, and anyone else involved could put their "generic cables" and went on a tour of FLAPS to see if I could find one. angry smiley

No Joy! It seems all the FLAPS stock 'generic cables' with the smaller diameter opening connector. Some suggested I cut the 'bad one' off and install one of the clamp-on connectors they sell. Checking those out, they didn't fit my Battery either! sad smiley

I "WILL" make it work!

I am wondering if any other Corvair folks have seen this problem?

It is now 64 degrees and raining like heck so I am probably done in the garage today! I will now get off my soap-box and return you to normal posts! drinking smiley

The negative post is smaller than the positive I'm guessing to discourage reverse connecting them I kind of thought cables were made in two types, positive and negative but I haven't bought one in a while.
Will it stretch enough to go over the post and use a longer bolt?

Most of the generic cables come sized for the negative post and they just expect people to spread them. Using a reamer would be the best.
Does anyone know what angle the taper is? I need to make a die to repair battery posts so I would like it to be the correct angle.

Bought the positive battery cable from Clark's and had the same problem. Managed to spread it enough to fit over the + terminal.

The connector on this cable Will open enough to go on the post but the bolt openings are at such an angle the bolt won't fit!

When I was looking for a 'correct' cable I took the deformed cable along to show the error and have something to compare the new ones with.

The lack of knowledge about automotive electrical stuff in the parts stores is sad!

When you spread them you have to bend the ends the bolt goes through also. It does work or at least the ones I've messed with have.

I spread the hole with the bolt still in the connector so the "wings" bend at the same time. Made of lead, so forms easy.

Yes, they do sell positive and negative connectors, they are different sized, just like they have been for 100 years.....

But, everyone I know just carries the negative size, aka, Universal.

Here is Deka's crimp on versions in real sizes:

Their two bolt style only comes in Universal.
