Oil leak after oil change
Posted by: Bogey72 ()
Date: September 03, 2018 11:08AM

Just changed my oil, and now have a leak on top of the oil filter, i used a clarks oil filter and replaced the washer with the new one that came with it.

I tried tightening it down extra but still leaks out. Quite sure i had it threaded perfectly. I never had this happen before. I did fill the oil filter with oil before installing.

All the old seals come out before replacing with new?

here's everything i removed -- maybe the new bolt-washer is no good? Should i take it off and try my old washer? the old one was installed late spring.

Is it possible to overfill the oil filter before installing? I am taking it off now, to reinstall with a little less oil in it.

I reinstalled with a little less oil in it, and tried the old bolt-washer, and it still leaked same spot on top. Stumped.

Show us the washer/bolt fitment. You just state "leaking from the top". Is it leaking around the bolt or the top of the filter.

Perhaps the head of the bolt where it contacts the washer has some burrs or rough surface on it, maybe try another oil filter bolt?

Also make sure the top of the aluminum where the washer sits did not accidently get a scratch in it from the bolt creating an escape path for the oil.

It leaked out the same spot same direction when I installed the first and then again the second time. The second install of the filter, I tried re-using my old washer which was holding just fine all summer.

I will have to get a new bolt to try that, and more new washers.

Could the filter itself be suspect?

I will also take it off again to look for scratches. Ran out of time to play today, so will update again when i can try these suggestions.

Try a NAPA 1038 oil filter and see if it leaks.

I say washer. Every time I would change my oil, I would have to use my 'old' washer or it would leak. The newer washers looked 'funny' and would be hard to center....
Center of the washer looked bigger

I always save the old washer, wipe everything down and reuse it. It just happed again with a new WIX with washer, so leak. Put my old one back on which has been used on a half dozen filters and the leak was gone.

I have noticed the newer washers have a larger inner diameter.

My son brought home a fist full of washers like this when he quit Bradsoil.

[secure.hmepowerweb.com]

They used them to replace oil drain plug washers that were no good. They have neophrene centers and work great. I imagine they come in various sizes. Might be worth a shot...
