65-66 TeleScopic Steering Column for Sale
Posted by: Tmshoemake ()
Date: August 28, 2018 08:22AM

65-66 Accessory Corvair TeleScopic Steering Column. All original GM. Chrome pieces have just been re-chromed in column, badges, ring and turn signal lever!!! Column has been lightly sanded down and painted in a rust prevented flat black. Turns smoothly and TeleScopic works well. Turn signal flows smoothly but switch has not been tested.
Was removed for a 65 Corvair and comes with steering wheel, STEERING BOX, column support and all parts seen in pictures. Not sure how the Horn cap mounts on Steering wheel, was found already off steering wheel. Rare Find.
Email or text me for pictures. Unable to load them on here. $1,295

Yes if it was the one with the sport steering wheel that the Corvette folks buy up

The one you have was only used in the Corvair.

I sent you a PM.

Loose the cut-off lower steering shaft and coupler and the steering wheel and the Corvette guys will pay way more than us Corvair guys for just the column.

It's a 66 column, not a 65. The 66 columns are harder to find.

Looks like some nice work was done on the turn signal switch harness. Of course what do you expect for $1295. Not sure about shipping costs though.

A tele is a nice feature smiling smiley after browsing the pictures in your liks above my suggestion would be to assemble it completely tip to tip box included . I think you will find there are several missing parts to make it all work . Test the cancel cam and horn after assembly. Good news is I'm sure the parts are available through Clarks or asking around here.

Thanks for all the comments everyone. I’m pretty sure this is 65 column though. I’m just throwing in the steering wheel and other parts in case someone wants them but it seems like everyone is going with the wooden steering wheel now a days anyways.

Craig replies: The column you have for sale is a late'65 and all '66 style.

The early '65 column had a simple band-clamp at the firewall and the upper shaft ended with a spline. The early style required a unique steering box.

The type you have was introduced in late '65. It used a coupling "bell" (flexible joint inside) and had a sturdy bracket at the firewall, and used the same steering box as non-tele cars. The upper shaft ends with a "T" that engages the coupling bell. Your column has all of these features and it's perfectly plausible that it came out of a '65; it was just a "late" production '65.

The only way to tell these two apart (late-65 to 66) might be color coding of wires. GM aligned the wire colors across the lines in 1966. Some of the original wires in the column might be different 65 to 66. The colored plastic tele Wheel was a 66 only option. 65 teles all had the woodish wheel.

Thanks Craig!!!! You guys are all very knowledgeable. Anybody have a diagram of how the horn button locks together step by step? Also anybody know where I can get a Wood Steering wheel hub or would it just be easier to place a Wanted ad on here??

The telescoping portion at the top is identical to the 65-66 Corvette. All the parts, including the hub, are available new at the Corvette vendors, like Ecklers, and maybe at Clarks. I have seen several "exploded view" diagrams around. I will try to find one and drop it on here.

Please note:
The column could very well be out of a 1965 since the redesigned column first appeared the end of March of 1965 and was used for the remainder of 1965 production and all of 1966. The steering wheel you have, however, is 1966 only since the wood grained plastic wheel was part of the telescopic column option through 1965, becoming a separate option for 1966.

You need to be aware that along with the steering wheel itself, there are also different internal components depending upon which wheel is used. Attached is a diagram for a 1966 column with standard plastic wheel, ignore the red markings but note only the items with asterisk are the same for both wheels. And while not labeled, the cap assembly is the same for both wheels.
