() Date: October 28, 2018 05:53PM More work completed on the front suspension this weekend: Installed the springs, shocks, control rods, Knoblauch spindles, Corvette hubs, steering arms and the stabilizer. I decided to temporarily install it in the car to allow the safe and easy installation of the coil springs... Also flipped the rubber bumper on the upper control arm because I put in on the wrong side last weekend... ![]() ![]() Dean F. () Date: November 03, 2018 10:56AM 1) At the rear, I left the vertical portion of the trunk floor in place as a heat shield for the fuel tank. 2) Up on top, there's a 1x1 cross bar that locates the radiator and supports some weight. It's bolted to the right and left headlight bucket. This photo is a detail of bolt at headlight bucket. Dean asked for a photo of the A/C condenser attachment but it's too buried to get photos. Basically there are cross bars that float the condenser just in front of the radiator and foam perimeter seals between the condenser and radiator. Craig N. () Date: November 05, 2018 06:54PM Minor progress from this past weekend: Fixed both headlight buckets by grafting the back sections of two intact bucket to the existing ones. Ken had cut the back section out of each bucket for airflow to the Scirroco radiator for drag racing. You can see the section that was removed in this "BEFORE" photo: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Dean F. Are you a glutton for punishment? Do you just like to make extra work for yourself? Or is there more details that you did not share? IF you had "two intact buckets" why didn't you just install them instead of cutting them up and welding the parts to your existing cut-up ones? Good work by the way, just not sure why. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- WA. state, 1 mile south of the Canadian border, I am not at the end of the world, but you can see it from here. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Re: 65 V8 Coupe w/Buick 215 - Racecar to Streetcar Build ![]() Posted by:

() Date: November 07, 2018 05:21AM ![]() Good catch, American Mel... That shiny river of brass was used to repair that side after it was damaged. The brass is holding most of the bottom and some of the side of the bucket to the body. This was done by an owner PRIOR TO Ken Arnold. It was going to be a lot more work for me removing that brass to free up that bucket and trying to fix the lower and side openings so that the "intact" bucket had a stable surface for fastening. As for the driver's side: the intact bucket did not fit as neatly as the original one...so, I opted for the graft repair instead. By the way, since I'm a novice (crap) welder, I was overjoyed with my success at "tacking" the grafted pieces to the buckets. Dean F. () Date: November 07, 2018 05:09PM I'm still trying to figure out the cooling system... There will definitely be a remote electric water pump and I will likely re-use the "Moon Eyes" tank as shown in the photo... And I must include plans for the heater lines for the A/C/Heater unit. The AFCO radiator arrived today... I'm still playing with where and how to open up the front for the cooling air flow...the latest iteration is to leave the license plate "square" intact and open up the areas on both sides below the bumper. ![]() Dean F. () Date: November 11, 2018 05:48PM On Saturday, Ken Arnold and I disassembled, cleaned, examined and re-assembled the rear bearing assemblies including the re-greasing of the bearings and fresh seals. Ken has made some very interesting and vairy useful tools to make these types of jobs much easier. Ken also built-up the 68 steering box, filled it with fresh 00 grease and verified that it was ready for use. Today, I pressed the NOS bushings into the torque arms. Also did a bunch of little things to include removing the old brake lines and fixed the master cylinder area in the trunk by using a needle scaler to remove the surface rust and loose paint, old sealer, resealed the seams, primered it and did the first coat of spatter paint. ![]() ![]() ![]() . . () Date: November 12, 2018 07:04PM Do they rotate in the sockets, or move outward? Maybe both! Thanks. Probably a common issue, but I think it's the first time I heard it mentioned. Paul Re: 65 V8 Coupe w/Buick 215 - Racecar to Streetcar Build ![]() Posted by:

() Date: November 13, 2018 05:07AM Friendly food for thought from another experienced Corvair mechanic: "I have never seen an OEM bushing shell move out of the arm. I have seen the rubber slide out of the shell. Welding can make this worse if the shell gets hot enough to soften the rubber. GM did it right. Before replacements were available, people were substituting other bushings which didn't press in tight, leading to the thought that OEM bushings should also be welded." Dean F. () Date: November 13, 2018 09:17AM I have had 2 bushing sleeves move in my car. The first one was fairly loose initially as it came out during install, so I pressed it back in and tried it but it didn't stay. Clarks replaced that one under warranty. The second one was more secure, but still came out. I didn't bother with replacing it again and decided to tack both of them, which I haven't done yet. Will definitely get done soon as I noticed some toe wear on that tire while under the car recently. ________________________________________________________ Chandler Powder Springs, GA. ![]() 1965 Corvair Monza 110/4sp Coupe Re: 65 V8 Coupe w/Buick 215 - Racecar to Streetcar Build ![]() Posted by:

() Date: November 18, 2018 07:40PM Cleaned and painted the undercarriage including the wheel wells (photos are not vey good...) Powder-coated the rear disc brake brackets. Removed and modified the fresh air vents to accomodate the 6x9 stereo speakers by removing the vent door and the stops then glued a plastic sheet cut into an oval to the outside of the vent housing to prevent air & water from entering. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Dean F.
