Dale- Thanks for posting! This is a really fine project you've got going.
I especially like the clean connection made to your new data connector and
the cable routing along the drivers side! nice!

OK, I now have the "new" Dash 'almost' installed! drinking smiley

It seems there is always 'one more thing' to do. I have managed to mount the "Display Control Switch" (or whatever DD calls it) into my Ashtray (I don't smoke and won't allow anyone to do that in my cars). I now have all the 'data wiring' done up front.

The dash is giving me a little trouble 'fitting' back in place. I am not sure if this is do to how I mounted the Display or if I just need to 'move' some of the wiring behind it for an exact fit?

I found that some of the 'clips' that the screws go into to hold the dash in place were missing so I am using new ones that don't want to fit until I 'modify' them.

Once I get the bottom of the dash, including the Heater Controls installed I will post a picture. I think it looks good!

I hope it works as well in the Monza as it did in my workshop!!!

Once I get the Heater stuff put back together I will be able to move on to the engine compartment and finish that!

Dale,
Drop the steering column. You'll have more room, less potential damage to the panel.

UPDATE!

The new Instrument Display is installed in the Dash and the Dash has been reinstalled in the Monza! The wiring has been run and I am working on the 'rear tray' (that flat area behind the rear seat).

I spent today building my Ignition and Data harnesses. This seems easy when planning them on paper but get a little tricky when you actually start to build them.

These are "version 1" and I have learned a lot!

I have cleaned the front heater ducts and repaired the Defroster Door. Interesting what you find when you get this deep into them!

I need to finish the main Battery Wiring so I can finally test the new Instrument Panel!

The last step is repairing and reinstalling the Rear Heater Duct! That is a mess which is probably why I have put it off. We only have two weeks till our Big Show so I had better get moving!!

If you come to the Third Annual Hoosier Corvair Classic on September 15th you can see "Dale's Experiment" (I named it the Red Baron when I bought it but 'experiment' seems more appropriate now). With all the money I have spent putting in the new instruments and fixing EVERYTHING as I go along I have not had time to work on the body or interior. Maybe 2019?

I hope to put up some pictures BEFORE the show!

I am hoping Seth is correct and I will be able to shout "IT'S ALIVE!" hot smiley

I have all the harnesses connected inside the engine compartment. I still need to wire up the Starter and install and plug in the Heater Motor.

I have all the inputs to the DD Control Box connected (except for power and ground) so that is coming along. I hope to have some pictures I can post later tonight. Don't laugh too much when you see them, this is "version 1" of everything and most of it has been made up as I go along.

I have determined that a 'version 2' will need to be installed at some point but if this works I will go back to updating the interior and maybe address the paint. Like I said before, it is a good "three foot car" (if you are at least three feet away is looks pretty good!).

I have installed an internally regulated Alternator. I hope to get the engine running in a few days so we will see if I did it right! I am worried about some leaks, but I don't know if I have time to address that before the 3rd Annual Hoosier Corvair Classic show!

Time for a shower, a meal, and a nap in front of the TV!

OK, here is the Dakota Digital VHX Control Box installed (Data Connector as well):

Here is what the Dakota Digital Custom Display looks like:

I was able to buy the 'last' items I need to power it up last night so I should 'lite it up' this weekend. Today is my birthday so I probably won't get much done today!!

I got the new Fuse Block installed and powered, found GROUND, installed my "Custom ACC Relay" board, connected the Battery and saw the slowly flashing LED on the Control Box indicating it had 'continuous power.' grinning smiley

I put in the Key and turned it to "ACC" and the Display Panel lit up! It displayed the Fuel Level (indicates the same as the old Fuel Gauge) and Voltage (+12 volts because I haven't charged it in a while. My digital multimeter agrees, 12 volts) and the readouts said "Check Engine" because it was not running. grinning smileygrinning smiley

All of the Indicators work! It shows Left Turn, Right Turn, Emergency Brake ON, and the Engine Warning lite (connected to the Low Oil Pressure and Over Temp Snap Switches)!

I spent most of today finishing up the under car wiring and installing the new Heater Hoses. This is a fun project, but I know a lot more about the underside of an LM! I am already planning "version 2" but that will have to wait a while.

A couple of more days cleaning it up and I hope to be driving!

I also need to remember to remove that 'Speedometer Cable' that is now dangling under the Steering Column!

Have they improved the gauge background? I bought one for my Malibu about 4 years ago and the background looks like it's printed with a low resolution ink jet printer. Not impressed with that from a $800 price tag.

If you check one of my earlier posts you will see the Display mounted in the Dash!

I think it looks great! And IT LIVES!!! hot smiley

I actually had it on last night (engine not running yet) and checked all of the indicators that I could. It reads the correct Fuel Level and Battery Voltage, the Turn Indicators work (even in the "4-way" mode), it sees the No Oil Pressure and lights the Check Engine light. grinning smiley

I should have the engine running Wednesday so I will check the Oil Pressure Sensor and Gauge as well as the "Oil Temp" unit (it 'thinks' it is reading Water Temp so we will see how that works). The Tach should be OK.

The GPS-50-2 unit 'finds' the GPS Satellites so I should have a working speedometer. thumbs up

I hope to have a few new pictures Wednesday showing the Control Box layout.

With all the "small problems" I keep finding I hope to be done Thursday! I really want to show it off at the 3rd Annual Hoosier Corvair Classic next Saturday. I have a couple of 'leaks' (what, on a Corvair??) that I may not get fixed before the show.

Like I said before, this is "Version 1" and all the money I was going to put on the interior has gone to the Display and the various problems I have run into along the way!

In 2019 we will make it pretty!
