Paint stripper for mag fan?
Posted by: davemotohead ()

Whats good to use? The engine I am rebuilding has about 1/8 " or more of paint globed on it, looks like it was painted with a paint brush, hell they might have dumped a entire bucket of paint on it, my sand blaster won't touch it, what is a good paint stripper that won't ruin the magnesium?

Use to use Klean-Strip Aircraft paint remover but it's not as good as it use to be. Jasco Paint and Epoxy remover is now my go to choice. Lots of Methylene Chloride in it drinking smiley

Agreed on Jasco, but don't expect it to remove the original GM gray coating. Not sure what GM used, but it is TOUGH stuff.

A little lacquer thinner in the Aviation Stripper helps it get in there sometimes, not such a putty consistency.

The original GM gray [to black] coating on the magnesium fans is a chromate dip conversion coating, designed to impart at least some corrosion resistance. It would be best not to remove it if possible. I have been looking up information on how to restore this coating as long as the underlying metal has not corroded too much.

Interesting - Yes magnesium oxidizes quickly. Any corrosion found must be removed before painting. Same as steel rust, you should not paint over it.

Bare magnesium must be sealed/painted ASAP.
