1992 ford 4.9 straight 6 manual trans :

Oh man last month the work truck gave up while I was on the way back from the machine shop picking up new rods and pistons for the Jimish car.... uggg talk about a bummer ! old reliable blew the head and cracked almost every intake seat geez ... a new casting came out of Vegas while the block was being bored and crank turned. Master kit and all back together including all of the might as well bits along the way to keep the old girl tip top. Kids are on summer break so we had several days of "mechanic camp ". Just a few hours ago it fired right up , reset spout connector after base timing then broke in that new cam for 15 minutes. That's a load off for sure! I have a few pics to share will post tomorrow. Now back to play cars.

How many miles did the engine have before the rebuild?

If your 4.9 didn't have over 200K miles on it, you must have abused it. smiling smiley

I had an 84 Bronco company vehicle that had 200k miles on it before they pried it from my cold dead hands. Only thing done to the engine was change the oil and sparkplugs.

171k and it was a strong daily driver. Leaking coolant did it in.

Rod,

Bet all the bearings we're within stock tolerances. At 171k miles, very light use for a 1992 truck.

In the early to mid 1990's, I worked for a delivery company that had Ford vans with that engine. They ran well.

In the rust belt you never see one rebuilt. The trucks disintegrate around them before the engines give.

Wonderful long lasting engine.

What timing, I drove my 84 F150 with the 300 cu in (what we called the 4.9L originally) to work today as I needed to haul something. Great runner, even with the YH oh, I mean YF downdraft carburetor and the 4 speed transmission. Only 150 k on mine. Somewhat rusty, but still in service. Engine probably good for another 100k. Hope the body is up for that, because at the current rate of use, that will be another 30 years!

Yes, even I can sit inside the engine compartment in mine.grinning smiley

On a side note, I removed the torn seat cover before I left work and discovered brand new looking upholstery underneath! This is the driver's side. I've got lots of years left! I purchased the truck from Dad's cousin upon his passing with only 60K miles on it. I remember him having clear plastic seat covers on a 1956 Olds. Still had the habit when he bought this truck. My win!

Personally NOT a ferd fan.
BUT, I gotta say, it is really cool that both of the kids are involved with this project!
Even if it were to BLOW UP next week, they will carry these memories FOREVER.
Awesome family project! thumbs upthumbs up

Frank, that is a beautiful seat, considering its age!

Well corvairs aren't the only ones that leak oil . Geezz ! I gave the oil pan bolts another 3 ft-lbs all the way around. Dang drip near the rear of course. I'll know more tomorrow . One piece rear main went in good so did the pan all was clean. Surfaces nice too. Eh we'll see. Yep the 300 5 speed trucks do what I need in a work truck tool bed and all no complaints here with my driver experience. Gas mileage is usually good. I own another f 150 x-cab same vintage with a 5.0 and automatic but it's a short bed otherwise I probably would have moved my bed over to that. The 5.0 has balls with the short box but tool bed I'm not so sure it would out perform the torque monster 300... the fuel consumption is more with the 5.0 too. Equally they are both old turd trucks but dang parts are so cheap, they are easy enough to work on plus they are way comfy. I keep the work truck in nice clean condition almost looks like new and stays respectable.

Heck Frank that is a great looking seat ! I have the captains chairs in both but that has got to be as good as it gets for a bench

Ha ha .... I'm a Chevy fan when it comes to early up to about the mid 70's trucks then I switched over. GM blew it in the 80's and 90's ford and Chevy both sucked after that till late 2002 dramax and Allison got better then a few years later power strokes got worse. I was afraid to by a high dollar truck to tell you the truth. I'm sure they are getting better all the time don't mean to beat on the new truck crowd.

Is it up to me to stand up for the GM inline six?

Inline six engines are great for old trucks, Unfortunately GM fell in love with V6's before they adapting their 292 (4.8l) to port injection. In South America the Chevy 250 had injection through the '90s, but those went away as well.
I've been driving my '67 292 (4.8) C2500 since 1985, replaced the upholstery twice and the last set is showing age.

I love the V8 in my Vette, but old trucks and Corvairs should have Six cylinders. GGGG

Oh, no, you are not the only fan of Chevy Sixes.
I have seen a little Chevy 250 inline-6 put many V-8's to shame!
I just was not going to bring it up.
It was not my intention to turn this thread into a "Mines bigger than yours" contest.

But if you want to really build an inline 6, you need to visit, > > > Clifford Performance, where 6=8 ! ! ! < < <
