What coil to use with a Petronix 1
Posted by: Dazanz ()
Date: August 02, 2018 03:06PM

I am getting recommended to use a 3.0 ohm flame thrower coil as the 1.5 ohm is rated for racing or V8 applications but the coil I have on my 65 Corsa TURBO which I believe is faulty is the 1.5 ohm version
Can anyone tell which way to go thank you

Does your car still have the factory ballast-resistor wire in the harness?

Craig asked the right question about the ballast.

The Petronix coil sheet is inaccurate regarding the Corvair (will they ever fix it).

The Corvair ignition performance/design is very similar to the V8's of the time except for the six cylinder distributor.

The 65 Corsa used a 1.8 ohm ballast wire with a coil that averaged 1.3 ohms for a TOTAL 3.1 ohms. Without a ballast wire a 3.0 coil would work, but you loose the ballast by-pass function on startup that boost sparkplug voltage during starting. The Petronix I is designed to be the most reliable at about a TOTAL 3.0 ohms.

Bob Helt did a lot of work checking coils and the Petronix 1.5 ohm (compatible with a stock Corvair ballast) Flamethrower wasn't any better then the original stock coil used on 140's and Turbo's. Unfortunately the original coil is not available now. A good substitute is the Hi Performance Chevrolet V8 "202" (1155202) coil. You can still find NOS units and there are reproductions, but hard to say how good the reproductions are.

I am not sure if I have a ballast resistor installed (wire?)
The coil that I have had in the car and it ran great for the 4 years I have owned the car is a flame thrower 1.5 ohm so I assume it has a ballast installed
The ignition may have been left on when the car was at the tuning shop.

It has a miss under load when it gets up to operating temperature

I guess because I had a 1.5 ohm coil I should just replace with the same.
Thank you

With Pertronix 1 I believe you are correct to replace the 1.5 ohm coil with the same and just keep the resistor wire in place.

Mine has full 12 volts and I'm running their Flamethrower coil on both my cars and I did notice increased performance when I installed those coils. Mine have been happy for years.

Fine with a Petronix II Ignitor and the Flamethrower II coil. Otherwise a failure waiting to happen.

Pertronix says to use 12 volts and Flamethrower 3 ohm, it's been fine for a long time but as with everything, they work until they quit. If I have to replaced them every 10-15 years I'm fine with that.

I think the Pertronix 1 instructions show 12 volts and 3 ohm coil as one option.
It depends on if you want to remove the resistor wire in the harness.
The other option in the instructions is to keep the resistor wire and use a coil in the 1.5 ohm neighborhood.
I would say again to follow the Pertronix instructions as I believe they are correct.

I had some confusion a while back and believe topics "Pertronix 1 Wiring" and Pertronix 2 Wiring" on this forum sorted it out well.

I also believe this to be correct. Had lots of help sorting this out and read quite abit. Ended up with Pertronix I and stock coil (1.5 ohms) w/ resistance wire. Runs great!

Btw have a 3.0 ohms Flamethrower brand new for sale if interested...

Dazanz - Are you running a newer Safeguard that allows connection of a direct Magnetic trigger as the triggering input?

That makes things very clear thanks Yellow
I just got back from holiday. 6.8 earth quake time in Bal sad smiley. And I have had a look and I believe I have the resistance wire in place

I have a photo could someone please confirm that this is indeed the Resistance wire.

Thank you

I don't know I purchased it in December 2014 from Ray Sedman?

I see the end of the resistor wire at the lower left corner of the picture.

As other said "that's an option", but with the Corvair using a 3 ohm coil and NO ballast resistor means you loose the ballast by-pass function of the Corvair harness that boosts coil voltage during starting. BTW the Petronix catalog does specify a 3.0 ohm coil for "six cylinders", but that is inaccurate. The Corvair used a ballast and coils similar to the V8 Chevies. I've run into this problem many times on Corvairs.

The Corvair ballast is 1.8 ohms and the stock coil is about 1.3 ohms for a total 3.1 ohms, but during starting (when the battery voltage drops, especially in cold weather) the 1.8 ballast is by-passed by a wire from the starter terminal "R".

I'm thinking with the electronic ignition losing the voltage switching isn't a problem.

The cranking voltage boost is something to consider. I'm pretty sure my 64 doesn't have that connection on the starter but could accomplish with another relay. But seeing as its running happy and my want to do list seems endless no change will happen until something involved breaks.
