OK You rode along with Greg up to 143 mph...

Add 300 MPH and go 5 miles instead of 1.5!

note when the engines change note...and Danny pulls the RED knobs.... he's switching from Alcohol to Nitromethane!

update:

FB post by Greg.

To All: numbers aren’t what we expected, because we clearly have an issue above 5800 RPM. 200 lb/ft of torque at the rear wheels, and 200 HP peaking at 5800, flatlining to 6300 before sharply falling off. Changing carburetors and jets didn’t do anything other than clean up some vacuum issues we were having. New plugs didn’t help. Funny thing is HP fell off toaround 146 at 6700, then actually climbed again past 7000 to 180 HP. Our thinking is a bad distributor that is losing timing in the higher RPM band, but we didn’t bring a new one to swap out, and nobody thought to, or was willing to, stand behind the car in the dyno and check to see if the thoughts to timing issues were real. Michael said standing behind the car at 5K RPM the fan was trying to suck his shirt off his body! His comment was it was very unnerving.

We did check the timing and found the engine was strongest at 34 degrees at 3K RPM. AFR staying between 12.5 and 13.X. I’ll post a picture of the sheet later today. We are convinced at this point we have an ignition issue and suspect the distributor apparatus is somehow losing advance in the higher RPM range because we see this curve and loss of power in every gear, not just 4th. We will be bringing several other distributors with us to swap out before we run at Bonneville. We’re also bringing a new MSD Blaster 3 coil and another new MSD 6AL ignition, and if that isn’t working we’re bringing Michael’s HEI ignition from his race car that we know will handle 8000 RPM!

Congrats to Greg and Mike.

How was the motor at full song, a little power still left?

Greg wrote this am;

To All:
We certainly had a full week...full of ups and downs, many obstacles, disappointments, trials and tribulations. But we prevailed! We have the record at 138.742 mph! We couldn’t have done it without everyone’s support, or Michael LeVeque. Our expectations for the week were greatly misaligned with reality, as we found accomplishing our goal to be extremely difficult. Constant weather changes, changing wind directions, and changing course conditions made it very difficult to get everything aligned just so to get that special run. Tougher still to get those ideal conditions on the next morning. Very humbling.
The heat and elevation ( Bonneville is at 4280 above sea level) was decreasing our horsepower by 17%, and we witnessed a 6 mph loss due to wheel slippage in our runs. Not to mention most of the time we had 3-14 mph head winds! Very difficult indeed.
We learned a ton, and with Phil Dally’s help we managed to get the chief scrutineer to accept our air dam that he had previously rejected, nullifying our fastest run this week. We are excited and looking forward to continuing to develop this wonderful car, and returning next year to up our record.
THANKS EVERYBODY!!!

Guess who now has the bug real bad to go back to B/V?

I do after all have some unfinished business there.

Good thing I didn't ever get rid of my racecar.

Time to call my Crew Chief and form a team.

Could be a multi car effort next year.

We got to get DW fired up Matt!!!

Just so everybody knows the answer Matt's question is...not without a turbo, blower, or 50 miles of downhill freeway.

DW seems to have lost his Fabricator.... why no action on the Subie transaxle...

NA 150+ at BV?

How about Ray Clayton's 380 hp NA...... Talked to Ray and he says it will last... if kept cool!

So...

Big / Huge 80 amp FAN! powered by a pack of Batteries.....as we all know at BV you need Ballast for Traction...

Sounds like a realistic combo to me!!

Phil--The answer to Matt's question is--it's already been done! Gary Robinson went 2-way 152.6 mph in 1974 in a Weber-equipped unblown Corvair. I was there.
I know what Greg and Mike had to go through to set their record. It's very rare to have perfect conditions at Bonneville so I congratulate Greg and his crew. I am sure that what they learned this year will enable Greg to have even more success next time.
