Wow! I don’t know how you have your corvair built, but I suppose there has been a lot done to the engine alone.

Not mine.. Gregory Lloyd's. Micheal LeVeque built the car / engine.

I’m speechless. I never knew a corvair could sound that good! With an engine that custom, I wonder how much power that thing puts to the wheel?

I went 148.253 mph in 1 1/3 mile on dirt at El Mirage.

Loring timing event is paved...good numbers for no turbo.

Dwight will hit 150 at El Mirage at this Novembers event.

Lloyd should get the SCTA B/V record in F/CPRO at 132.8 right now..

There is no comparing Loring to Bonneville...apples and oranges.

Not to mention backing it up with a return run the next day at B/V.

But I give the guy all the credit in the world for being out there.

Congratulations to Gregory Lloyd--That was a great result on a 1.5 mile course. As far as I know, the fastest unblown Corvair (officially) is Gary Robinson from Portland. In 1974 he ran his Weber Corvair at B/V with a 2-way average of 152.6 mph and a 1-way time of 153.5 mph. This is when we had to make 2 runs (in opposite directions) within 1 hour.
Unfortunately, the record didn't stand because he was beaten by an entry from Mazda and Car & Driver magazine. This was a cheater which was allowed to run an illegal entry in the Production class. The rules are very clear for Production classes: "NO ENGINE SWAPS!". Their car was prepared by Racing Beat which is a factory sponsored shop which at the time, was doing a lot of projects for Mazda. They took an RX2, which is a very small sedan which used a 60 cubic inch (swept volume) rotary engine. The B/V rule book equates rotary engines with conventional piston engines by a 2:1 multiplier, i.e 60 cubic inch Rotary (X2) equals 120 cubic inches.)
Mazda replaced the RX2 motor with a RX4 model which has a swept volume of 80 cubic inches (33% bigger). Car & Driver told the B/V officials that the RX4 was just a slightly bigger version of the RX2 motor. THAT WAS A BIG, FAT LIE. Don Sherman (Car & Driver Technical Editor) admitted to me that it took a considerable amount of modifications to the car to get the bigger motor in place. Sherman also showed me a stack of hand-drawn homologation papers to cover a number of aerodynamic modifications that were clearly illegal. We filed a protest and I argued our protest before the SCTA board, but we were denied. (They didn't want to get sued by Mazda.)

AHH Big Bucks usually prevails! Sad but true!

Tom, With the good salt conditions this year, do you think we'll see a run of 160 from Gregory? GGG

I've suggested that he get to SLC early and put the car on a dyno at that elevation....

folks...

Here's a camera shot updated every 15 minutes...

I remember a 70's Mazda pickup with a 13B being forced to run in A displacement because of the "new" rotary rules.
