OT - sort of - where do you buy good electrical connectors
Posted by: tboltkc ()

As the subject says, I'd like to find a place to buy quality electrical connectors. It seems like the ones I get at my FLAPS and big box home improvement store are not very good.

Thanks.

Are you speaking of those ring, fork, quick disconnect style terminals with the insulated crimp area?

3M solderless terminals, crimp terminals available form DigiKey, Mouser, etc electronic suppliers.

But, more important than the maker of the terminal is a quality crimper. I use the Ideal Crimpmaster series with the changeable dies.

Most recently I have been using a place called Crimp Supply, Crimp Supply, They have pretty much anything you want in a quality terminal and wire. They also seem to be about the most reasonable for pricing and have small enough quantities.

Like Frank says a good crimping tool is most important. 3M are probably good, I can vouch for T&B (Thomas and Betts) or Burndy, google.com can tell you where to buy. Probably eBay.com will have them.

Thanks for the suggestions. I probably do need a better crimping tool - mine is a vintage cheapo model so I'm sure that is part of my problem.

Many different crimpers for the many connectors. I have around 20 and some of those have changable dies. Corvairs most;y take a Delphi Crimper:

First is the $40 tool I use at work, made thousands of crimps with it. Below is what I use at home, $7 HF, I really see very little difference.

I have the T&B and Klein versions of what Moomba shows, and they work good.thumbs up

But I like the one crimp does both insulation and wire that the Ideal Crimpmaster and other specialty crimpers perform. I bought the HF version of the Crimpmaster and it does not work as well, seems to not close tight enough for some wire gage, terminal size combinations.

If you pull on the wire hard and it does not come out of the terminal, all is good!smileys with beer

OEM Corvair terminals are "open barrel" style, and need a crimper to fit. Ideal makes dies to fit. Others make them, like AMP ($$$$), Molex, Paladin, etc.
