Does removing the fuel pump rod affect oil pressure?
Posted by: Roelof ()

Hi,

I am installing an electric fuel pump. In the engine compartment I used a bypass plate in an old fuel pump. I also left out the fuel pump rod. But now I am just finished I just wondered.....Does leaving the fuel pump rod out affect oil pressure?

If memory serves, NO.
The fuel pump rod rides on an oblong type of cam that is turned by the camshaft I think. (It has been many years since I had a Corvair engine apart).

For what it is worth, here is a photo of the cam that the fuel pump rod rides on. It is external of the block but under the timing cover if memory serves.

Not to knit pick here but more for someone reading this trying to learn. The fuel pump push rod is driven by a cam on the crankshaft. The timing cover is on the front of the engine. Half in the belhousing and half in the engine block.

I'll also add that if you leave it in you'll hear it hitting the plug you put in the fuel pump hole. Yeah, I made that mistake once.

A lot of folks might say leaving the mechanical one operating will lower the oil pressure as it fills the crankcase with gas.

Should also be installing that electric pump by the fuel tank. Electric pumps are not meant to pull, especially that far. I know it has been done but for longevity , put it near/next to tank.

All you eccentric people can't remember the word of that part is ECCENTRIC.
Leaving the rod out will not affect oil pressure (unless your mechanical pump is leaking gas into the crankcase).

Name of the part.
What does leaving the rod out have to do with the mechanical pump leaking?

I did remove the mechanical pump as it was leaking...like the one before... so thats what its got to do with it. I installed an airtex electrical, yes at the tank, and now finish the wiring.

Thanks for the replies.
