1968 Engine information needed
Posted by: gnrand ()
Date: July 11, 2018 05:43AM

I have a 1968 Monza 4 speed that came to me with a 140 motor. Is there a way to determine if that is the engine that originally came with the car. I know from the current engine block numbers that it is not the original engine.
Thank you
Jeff

Post a photo of your body tag. It should give the knowledgeable ones the info to tell what should have been in it. Tag is on rear rail in engi e compartment.

Factory installed 68 and 69 engines would have the last 9 digits of the the VIN#. The other numbers (starting with the T) typically would require the fan shroud to be removed to read.

Typically, just have to remove the grease and oil from block flange just in front of the oil pressure switch for the engine number.

The vin number on the block, I agree, the vin may be covered somewhat by the fan shroud.

Original 1968 engines and tranny's should be stamped with the partial VIN numbers on them both.

Yes, the case castings on the manual transmissions and PG were revised to include a pad for stamping numbers

He states that he knows it is not the original engine. I think what he is asking is if the car originally came with a 140.

There were no differences in the body for 95/110/140 so the body-tag will show no indication of the original engine.

Turbo engines are the only ones with a body-tag indication because they required the "U" shaped exhaust cutout.

If the deck lid is original to the car, the holes for the 140 emblem are not the same for the 110HP emblem. That might tell you what engine the car originally had.

Yes, I did noticed that there are 4 holes in the deck lid. I assume that the 140 emblem was added after the fact. Probably a 110 if I had to guess.

Jeff,

Know it is a long shot. But have you looked under the seats for the factory build sheet? Think the rear seat bottom is where I found mine years ago on my original 69 Monza coupe.

If I find the build sheet, I will start playing the lottery.

Speaking of the lottery... I have two '68 engines here. Maybe one is from your car? What are the last three digits of your VIN? I'll check against my engines.

@cnicol:
A turbo body tag gives you some indication of the fact it IS a turbo? Neat.

Seeing as my Corsa is a turbo, what do I look for to know if my turbo engine is matching a turbo body?
