SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF # 4
Posted by: 63Darrin ()

I hope all is well with everyone out there.

I need some information and I'm hoping one of you can help. Yesterday while driving home from our club (South Coast Corsa) picnic, the spark plug on # 4 came out. This happened to me a couple of years ago on the same plug. I fixed it then and everything has been great until yesterday.

My question is: Can I re-thread the same hole with another heli-coil?

I don't want to have the head takin to a shop and repaired because I have a 140 ready to be put back together and installed. I'm using the 102 now because everything works and it's original to the car.

Has anyone ever experienced the same thing?

Thanks a lot for your input,

Darrin

As long as the hole that is in your head is not too large to be drilled and tapped for a timesert you can install one and should be good to go. Since that hole has already been inserted and had blown out again the hole may be too large for proper timesert install. If that is the case best repair would be to have the hole welded closed and rethreaded by a good machine shop (or course head would need to be off the car for this). There may be some oversized insert product that would work in a pinch but I am now aware of one myself.

Man 18MM is monster. Would that kiss the fins around the spark plug hole? Would certainly be quite close.

I had a hole that would not take a Time-Sert. My Machine Shop guy had a "second time Time-Sert" that took care of it. I took the head off and brought it to him since the engine was not in the chassis but it wouldn't be necessary. Although it's hard to get most machinists to venture outside the shop.

It depends on the OD size that the insert you used before had. The one Dave pictured above might work.

With some research you can find the OD dimension a particular insert has. Or the ID it needs.

I just read your original question above. If you installed a Helicoil and the wire just came out when unscrewing the plug that would be one thing when considering using another Helicoil. But since it blew out of the hole under cylinder pressure, that's another thing entirely. I don't think another 14mm Helicoil will work but perhaps an insert will.

I like the Time-Sert because it threads in and then you run another tool down through it that makes it expand and lock in to the aluminum.

Yup Timesert calls their oversized insert a Bigsert. It is usable in a hole up to 16.8 MM or .660Inches

If you can't find anyone locally with a Big-Sert kit, you can rent the Big-Sert tool from aircooled.net
