You didn't get the float / needle back in correctly... do it again..

What Matt said, or the float is sunk/stuck down.

Is the needle supposed to hook in with the spring?
Also does anyone have a closeup picture of how the needle is supposed to fit?

No the needle sits under the float "cross bar" The "hook" sits on top of the needle, this is where the float level is adjusted, the tab behind the needle seat area adjusts the float drop.

Bob helts carb book has all you would ever need to do a hv carb rebuild with great pics.

What Tom says, after all of the trouble I had with my carbs. Get Bob's book, has everything you will need to know and see in detail.

Some needle and seats come with an extra little clip dealey that I don't use. I figured it was included to fit other applications besides Corvair. I could be wrong.
The smaller Late float has provision for the spring. The bigger Early float does not. The provision is a little tab with a hole that the straight leg of the spring goes through.
So the extra little clip dealey and the spring are two seperate things.

Jim I'm not sure about the clip either but. I bought two rebuilt carbs from a vendor. The one carb had issues! The float would stick after it sat overnight. The vendor said it was because I wasn't driving it enough and as soon as I did, drive it more, it would stop sticking and dumping fuel outside the carb.

Well fast forward a year or so, I got fed up with having to tap the carb every time I wanted to start the car, to free the float. I took it apart last week. Everything in the carb looked brand new, I could find nothing wrong with the needle or seat to account for it sticking and dumping fuel.

Except that little clip on the end of the needle that connected to the float. Got one out of spare carb parts, installed it, and haven't had the float or needle stick and dump fuel out of the carb since.

So I don't know if the clip fixed it, or just taking it apart and cleaning it out, did. But it is not doing it anymore.

I'm still curious if the clip corrected the problem, or if there was a speck of grit or dirt in the carb needle or seat. I didn't flush the carb, I just wiped out the bowls and put it back together.

Maybe the more experienced will know. But it is now fixed!

With all the trouble I had with my carbs I found that if the float "Drop" was not set properly the needle would come to far out of the seat and when the float was raised up again it would bind in the seat and not allow it to close. From what I read in Bob Helt's book that little clip was supposed to help with that problem.
The easiest fix is to set the float drop as per the specs.

Well I did check the float level, but I don't remember checking the float drop.

But I would expect a vendor to know the proper way to set one up. But that doesn't mean that they didnt have a bad day and didn't do it correct.

But it is working as it should. But if I ever have reason to take it apart again, I will check it.

Thanks

I did expect the same thing and that is not what I got for a very large sum of cash. Very disappointing indeed.

There is a carb rebuilder that seems to have more than his share of issues. I just fixed some more the other day.
