What year and engine? If it's not leaking it then it's burning it. It takes a lot of oil burning before it become visible in the exhaust.

Any chance its running real hot and the temp sensor isn't working. It happened to my wife's uncles car. The oil just vanished.

I did notice a lot of heat in the engine compartment but this is Florida and in the 90s. will check her cooling fan and pcv today as she is coming over. Thanks for all the help as I am old school and am lost with modern cars.

How often is she needing to add oil? The solution could be as simple as checking it more often.

It has been mentioned to check the PCV. On engines with relatively large bores if the oil is making it all the way to the combustion chamber they often don’t smoke.

Oil consumption isn’t a guaranteed death sentence unless the engine is repeatedly run out of oil. I have a 460 in a Ford with what I think is worn/broken oil control rings. It was a common problem for the year. I have been using it for years with a quart/25 miles oil consumption. It still runs great and doesn’t smoke. The only time you can even smell it is when engine braking.

ch

Checking oil only when oil pressure drops? I would suspect it ran low too many times and now consumes oil.

05 would be a 4.2 liter straight 6.
Chances are it is burning it. Some of those engines have a tendency to stick the oil control rings. You could try additives or even Seafoam.

Yes that's probably her problem. many newer engines have thin "low tension" rings that get stuck easily if the correct weight oil isn't changed frequently. It would be worth a try to see if additives help because the 4.2 six is tough and expensive to work on.

Find a shop that sells BG products. Have them do a BG 109 engine flush then add fresh oil with BG RF7, cleans all the sludge in the rings and conditions seals. If it's still using oil after that, the damage is done and it will continue using oil until a rebuild or it's put out to pasture.

I checked the car today the temp with an infrared unit and it was fine, the fan is a drive unit not electric motor and working, SO it must be oil ring problem ? so I added an additive to both the oil and fuel systems so time will tell if that helps. Thanks for all your help !!!

Gene, was the oil full? We cannot understand how one qt. low would cause oil pressure to drop???

One other thing to consider is that the 4200 L6 takes SEVEN (yikes!) quarts of oil. If you're old school like me and are used to dumping in five quarts during an oil change, you're starting out two quarts low.

I do not know how low the oil was when she noticed the pressure dropping, after adding the additive my son added some oil to the full was not much !! she will keep regular checks on oil level.
