FOUND!!: LM Convertible Hold Down side latches
Posted by: MtnVairMike ()
Date: June 29, 2018 08:19AM

Yeah you know the one that always breaks that holds down the top when opened?

Well one of my side latches did.

Need a good used one or a pair if available.
Hardware a bonus if it comes with them.

Please let me know.

Thanks

Used ones are very apt to break, I know. This is now very old plastic. Someone here said don't let them snap into place, that's what starts the crack. Instead hold them away from the frame, push it past the lock point then release it slowly and relax the frame pressure. Haven't broken one since I started doing that.

Someone also mentioned you can drill the rivets and reverse the plastic piece. It works, but then then you will have to hold it away. Although you will still have your patina.

I'll give my two cents: The plastic becomes brittle with age like others have stated. I don't know what color the originals were originally, but most have aged to an amber color. The repros are all white plastic. If you replace one with a repro then they will not match and its only a matter of time before your other original breaks. The best longterm solution is to replace both of them with repros.

Another tip for you when you go to replace them is to be very cautious with the two nuts that hold them. If you drop one they will fall down behind the well and are a complete nightmare to either fish out or remove the armrest and trim to retrieve. Ask me how I know.

X2 on the nuts. Stick a strong magnet right below your work area.
