OT-Heating Oil Transfer Pump-Which To Buy? And My Experiences...

I was offered several hundred gallons of oil for free, if I could remove it. So I bought a $35 12 volt oil transfer pump on Amazon, and I was able to pump most of the oil, but the pump just started smoking after probably 400 gallons. So I wonder how much I have to pay for a pump that will last? I read some of the Amazon reviews for other pumps that are double the price, and some aren't machined properly, and another one the motor started smoking like mine. A real bag of cats, screeching and running faster and slower. But it worked all right for 3 days, now it's done. It did pump most of the oil, I've just got to finish the job as I have a couple of drums on my property that I'd like transferred to my big storage tank.

You ran past the duty cycle of the pump. Don't forget if you are using a battery and the voltage drops the current draw goes up causing extra heat which equals smoke!

Also, the tank you were transferring to should be below the supply! "Siphon" effect.... makes transfer faster!

Should given it a rest, most of the are designed to fill vehicle tanks, not move 400 plus gallons of fuel at one time.
