UV dye and an oil leak
Posted by: Grandpacorvair ()

I have an elusive oil leak and was considering using UV dye in the oil to try and track it down. As I often do, I used the search engine here to check out if others have done this successfully, only to the search come up empty. Is there a reason to NOT use dye?

My issue is that I can clean out the 'hell hole' and within several miles it is wet again. I have done a search on rear engine leaks and have found suggestions that I will check the next time the car is up on the lift... Note that this is a fresh rebuild with all new seals/gaskets and orings..

I used to find a leak in my UTV , found the leak and had no issues.

There is no reason not to use a dye to determine where an oil leak originates but for some there is no reason to use it as many here know all the workings of a Corvair engine. Fred Johnson wrote a pamphlet detailing how to fix any/every Corvair oil leak. Big leaks are easier to identify the source and small leaks can be a little harder but certainly not impossible. I know 1 place FJ identified in the back of the engine was the oil pump idler shaft pressed into the rear housing.
His is good reading for those that really don't want any oil leaks.

I've used UV dye for all kinds of things with no ill effects; it really helped on a transmission leak on my Firebird. You'll probably be surprised at how many small oil leaks you have when you run the dye through.

Sounds like the oil cooler seals as the first culprit, the second would be the pulley seal. I failed to lubricate the pulley seal sufficiently when I replaced once, just a quick wipe with oil was insufficient and lo, the "hell hole" would be wet again and the bonus is the pulley would fling it around too! Look at the back of the harmonic balancer or steel pulley depending on what you are equipped with, if it doesn't have oil marks I'd check the cooler seals.

UV dye and black light is the only way to go, helped me find an oil leak that was coming through a porous crankshaft and into the pilot bearing bore on a Small Block Chevy.
I use it almost daily for AC leaks.
I know of no reason to not use it.
