I was at a car show on the weekend and a guy comes up and starts talking to me about my Corsa and he tells me that he was the local Corvair expert about 15 years ago. He owned seven different cars and everyone would go to him for repair advice. He then told me that Spyder's and Corsa's did not come with a posi differential and they were optional and are extremely rare, is that true?
I thought all Spyder's and Corsa's came with as part of the package.

Thx

I've always understood Posi to be a separate option; available on any model and required by none.

Posi optional to a Corsa? Yes.

Extremely rare? Not in my opinion.

Fun fact...Corsas came stock with a 3-speed tranny. The 4-speed was an option. It is rare to find a Corsa with a 3-speed though.

Corvairkid.com shows sales of G81 positraction axle ranged from 5% to 7% between '65, '66, and '67. Other years are probably similar.

That's an average between all models so I'd guess Corsas and Spyders saw higher fitment while plain-janes were lower to come to that 5%ish average.

I'm of the opinion that the word rare applies to very few things in the Corvair world.

Just follow this forum for a while and you'll see that virtually everything is available.

It drives me crazy when C/L sellers use the word rare with our cars...they aren't Corvair people.

I hear rare and I'm thinking of a thick, dry air aged steak. So is my wife and dog. Not political I hope, I am Trump fan, not to be confused with 63turbos fan. When I hear he likes a well done steak with ketchup, that's a bridge too far.

Thanks for the education, not sure why I thought they came with the posi as part of the package but now I know better.

A "Positraction" (limited slip) differential wasn't even standard on Corvette.
Chevrolet - and other manufacturers love to have you "let your fingers do the walking" thru the Options list when ordering your car.

I'd have to say that a 5-7% number on an option is pretty rare, though not as rare as some others. Such as N44 Quick Steering or F41 HD suspension.

4-5% is the range for Factory installed C64 Air Conditioning as an example. It's pretty rare, especially in certain parts of the country.

Just to let you know Gregb I used to also believe all Corsas and Spyders came equipped with posi traction differentials. Then someone set me straight about 10 years ago. Out of curiosity who was this "Corvair expert" you met? Name, location, etc.

So far I am at a 50/50 percent on the diffs that I have had in cars that were posi's 2 with 2 with out. Both that had them were spyders. I thought that the posi was more common, I guess mistaken.

I believe his name is Jack but did not catch a last name and we were at the Reynolds Alberta Museum in Alberta Canada. He said he lives in Edmonton.

While Posi and A/C were installed in small percentages on new cars there were about 2 Million Corvairs built. I've found that folks tend to remove these items for resale from cars that are scrapped.

I suspect the Corvairs that still exist have Posi transaxles and A/C in higher percentages now due to retrofits.

Makes one wonder what percentage of Corvairs built still exist.

The majority of posis I've seen around here were added by owners or in Monzas. 1969s have more than any other year as factory equiped. Using up excessive inventory?

I kinda always figured they were also regional a bit relating to snow amount. Here in the SW they seem somewhat uncommon in comparison .
