Airtex Electric Fuel Pump
Posted by: JimBrandberg ()

I've about had it with mechanical pumps so I'm gearing up for electric. I like to buy local but Airtex E8016S is getting hard to find.

I bought one from NAPA Auto Parts last year which is an Airtex but now they've switched to Carter with the same E8016S reference.

Apparently O'Reilly Auto Parts doesn't want anything to do with Airtex, they won't even get one in.

Advance Auto Parts has E8016S but they are Spectra.

Going against my buy local preference, I ordered an Airtex E8016S from JC Whitney but apparently they are closing them out at a reduced price. I ordered through Ebay and wonder if I'll get on the catalog list again.

Anyone have any opinion on why Airtex is getting hard to find?

How about an opinion on similar Carter or Spectra pumps?

I'm also getting a few used Ford inertia switches with a wiring pigtail for $20 or so each. I'm thinking about mounting it in the trunk rather than under the dash but still undecided.

I don't think they will disappear, used on many more applications than a Vair. Just about RV with an Onan Gen set uses this pump.

FWIW I bought an 8016S and installed it near the tank...measured pressure at the carb was only 1.5psi. So I removed it, put in an 8012S and then a pressure regulator so I could get the 2.5-3psi that I wanted at the carb.

That said neither pump was hard to find. Amazon has both.

I'm working on getting a standardized installation. Did one yesterday and more coming up. It felt good to put the leaking mechanical pump in a body bag.

I tried to fight the good fight with the mechanical pump but...

I came off the fuse box and through a toggle switch and through a Ford inertia switch, I think I like it.

I mounted behind the bulkhead near the tank with 90 degree cast iron fittings and an additional hole and grommet, I think I like it.

Sorry but I didn't take any pictures. I imagine Dave, Steve and others have a regular way they do it. I'd like to see and hear more ideas, I'm certainly open to tweaking or changing my system.

Something that comes on with the key and has an inline fuse instead of the fusebox sounds good.

I want to stay away from hacking into the ignition wire, I don't think the pulses from the solenoid fuel pump can do the ignition system any good.

Years ago I bought both the AirTex and Carter. They look the same, BUT the Carter was much louder.

The FLAPS tend to carry the cheapest part to sell.

davemotohead has been using the Facet fuel pumps for years without issue. If the AirTex gets hard to find I may give the Facet a try.

I'm using this. Comes in 4-7psi (01) and 2-4psi (03, I think) models.

Jim, you may also want to add a momentary switch under the dash to prime the carbs when the car sits for a while.

Thanks for the input.
The way I have it the pump comes on with the ignition switch.
I've used a push button switch in the past for priming when the pump only runs when the engine is running.
