Question about EM axles
Posted by: Murphy ()
Date: June 11, 2018 05:34AM

Can anyone tell me is al EM axles are all the same length? I know bearings are different 60/62 vs.63-64.

I want to use my 61 axles w/ a 64 differential.

All EM car axles are the same length.

Your 61 axles will work with a 64 differential.

If you are installing 64 rear suspension there were 64-only spacers that go behind the rear brake backing plates. I doubt these have much effect on the axle length, but they space the plate away from the transverse leaf spring.

All Corvair axle shafts are the same length.

The entire "Uni-Pak" drivetrain is off-set 1.5 inches to the left to allow the axles to be the same on each side.

To specify....
Dan is correct.

All Corvair Car axel shafts are the same length. Bearing housings are different for 1964, cast, but can be used on all years.

However the Corvair FC or Truck axel shafts are longer and have larger bearings. Fc axils are easily identified by the collar at the yoke end. Fc axils are also 5 lug.. however, beware, some Early car axils have been drilled for 5 lugs in order to mount custom wheels.

I did get a pair of the spacers you speak of from Cali-Corvairs. I was reading some posts in regard to this subject and learned of the spacers. That got me thinking about axle length, but upon seeing the spacers in person, a quarter inch wont make any difference.
Think I'm on the right track.

Thanks for the input folks.

64 (cast) bearing housings will not fit into 60-63 backing plates.

Almost right.winking smiley

Cast bearing housing is correct for 1963 and 1964, and will not fit 60 to 62 without modifying the backing plate.

60 to 62 sheet metal housing bearings will fit all early cars, 60 to 64.

Ha-ha! you guys... There is a lot of meat to hog out for adapting the 63-64 bearings to the earlier backing plate. It does work though.
