Original Spare Tire 1963 Monza ?
Posted by: MonzaJPD61 ()

I believe the 63 Monza I recently acquired may have an original tire as the spare. Is there any way to know if a US Royal Safety Champ 6.50 x 13 whitewall would be correct? I surely looks old enough. Of course unsafe to use, just curious...

It could be original, since U.S. Royal was the OEM tire. There should be NO D.O.T. designation on the back side if it is original. If there is a Department of Transportation number on the tire, then it is a reproduction.

I looked the tire over more closely...US Royal Safety 800 Low Profile 6.500 x 13 whitewall no DOT markings.

US Royal was an original supplier to GM for tires used on Chevrolet. That imprint is one used back in the 1960s for the Corvair tires.
Quite likely that yours is an original spare tire.
Firestone was another brand that was an original supplier to Chevrolet for the Corvair.
A few years ago, a new 1963 Corvair Monza coupe was bought at the Lambrecht Auction in Pierre Nebraska by Pete Borchert of Arizona.
His delayed "Dealer Prep" is documented HERE on Corvair Forum. - A great well detailed story! His Monza originally had the Firestone tires.

That's a neat story. My car has 22.5k miles on it and looks similar to the one highlighted except mine's a PG.
Thanks for the link!

The "Low Profile" marking is interesting. Some of the Corvair books mention Chevrolet used a lower profile tire on the Corvair vs. there other cars at that time.

I see that I typed an extra zero in the 6.50, but yes, looking at the tall sidewall, the Low Profile marking made me laugh.
