LM Internally Regulator Alternator Upgrade

I recently installed a small Odyssey battery. I have used this same battery for several years on a small block 350 and it has worked great so I figured it would be good In the Corvair and the existing battery recently died.


During the install I checked the charging system and it was charging at 18 volts. I guess I know why the battery died. I had a decision in front of me, but new regulator and hope the alternator was still good. Or upgrade to an internal regulator. I decided on the upgrade. I purchased a rebuilt life time guarantee alternator from Autozone for a 1973 Chevelle - DL7127-12M. I pulled the front cover off my Alternator and replaced the bearing with the brand new one and placed it on the new alternator. Used my original fan pulley. Made some jumper wires to complete the wiring.

Essentially you jump the two outside terminals and the two inside terminals for the external regulator connector. Replace the original connector for the alternator with a new one that fits the new alternator. I also got that from Autozone. Part number 205. The blue wire goes to terminal 1 and the white goes to terminal 2.

I then made a new bracket for the alternator. Bent up some mild steel from Ace Hardware. It is good and strong.

Best part is you now have a low cost lifetime alternator, the idiot light on the dash still works and it can easily be returned to stock if you wanted..

Easy Peasy when you know what you're doing. Nice job. What's the CCA and price on that Odyssey battery? I've not seen one used in a Corvair before.

I like that battery!! is it the pc680? the battery holder and clamp is super trick also... did that also come from Odyssey? inquiring minds want to know!

We shall see how it holds up. On the 350 I have been running it on it has powered headlights and an electric fan so I figured it should power the Corvair. I am.hopong it will do just fine.

Corsavert, I just wanted to mention a word of caution about that glass inline fuel filter. Keep a close eye on I because the cast metal threads in the center where the two ends screw together are often sloppy and can strip or crumble. Its good you placed it on the suction side - I would never one of those under pressure

17 amp hours = 1 ampere draw for 17 hours.

Your Corvair may draw 100 amps during start..stockers draw 60-70.

You have approx. 25 seconds of cranking on a fully charged battery..

This is about the same as a Garden tractor battery I use on some Vairs.

GM Heritage site Jas specs for the 65 Corvair.

It shows Chevrolet supplied a 44 amp-hour battery with the new car.

I used a small dry cell battery like that in my racecar for several years and it worked well. I can't remember if it was an Oddysey or another brand. Jeff moore from Missouri turned me on to them.
