SOLD!! Interior fire: Otherwise complete '64 Monza Spider Turbo coupe
Posted by: DrDarby ()
Date: June 04, 2018 01:01PM

42,000 mile 1964 Corvair Monza Spider 2dr Coupe. Unfortunate victim of a severe interior fire. Interior and glass non existant, roof warped. This was a running and driving car up until 5 days ago (5/30/2018) that I rescued from our shop's towing company. The owner had recently purchased it and only had liability insurance.
Other than the fire damage the car is (was) in great condition. The running gear appears in very good condition, it has the 150hp Turbo engine, all the turbo only parts are present and on great shape, manual transmission, manual brakes although I'll assume the master cylinder was heat damaged as the pedal now goes to the floor.
We are a Vintage Volkswagen Restoration facility and my thought was to use the engine in a VW Bus project however the car looks so decent I thought it best to see if a Corvair enthusiast might get better use out of it. I would say it could be repaired but you are going to need a parts car and a heck of a lot of elbow grease plus the roof s warped (fire was so hot it melted the lead out of the roof seams!)
I'm not interested in parting the car out, am aware of the value and would like to see it go to someone that could use it or the sum of it's good parts.
I'm open to reasonable offers and would be happy to assist with shipping if need be. The link to Chicago Craigslist below should be active

We won't assume it is FREE so long as you don't think it is a gold mine.

Too bad to see this. Wish I was closer. We would be talking.

My only question is: How did a fire that hot get started in the interior without "help"?

Hmmm - no title.

Years ago a neighbor had his 65 Mustang stolen. When the police found it the car was intact, but the interior was badly burned. The police said they see this when kids steal a car for a joyride and torch the interior to get rid of any evidence.

OK, it has been advertised in the Corvair Community, now put it on eBay with no reserve and let the market decide it's true value. Easy peasy, no?

Who was the previous owner?
Could it have been owned by a CORSA member in Chicago?

It's good you saved it. Much appreciated.

Did anyone else notice it has a Delco battery?

Indeed...how does a vehicle that was "running and driving" as of 5/30/2018 not have a title.

Caveat Emptor!!!

I don't understand where the NO TITLE issue is coming from. I never mentioned not having a title. The title is sitting here right in front of me.
If I had no title I would be listing Corvair Parts for sale not the whole car.

The owner and his wife were out for a drive, smelled smoke and got out. I was told they saw smoke, lifted the back seat and saw a wire smoldering. Then left the seat up and the doors open and ran away from it thinking it would explode ?!

Darby, you need to look at your C/ L ad... says for parts "title" = missing"

Also... Corvairs have no inside wiring under the back seat... unless added by an owner

Likely "someone" installed an Amp Meter at some point.
The old school gauge ran a pair of wires from the battery terminal on the Voltage regulator then forward to the gauge and back.
Often poorly done on a Corvair with the wires ran thru holes drilled in the body, no grommets, and under the seat/carpets/sill plates.
Great way to burn up a Corvair...

PS. I've got a 1964 parts coupe with a nice roof.

From CL ad:

Low mile original 1964 Corvair Monza Spider 2dr Coupe. Unfortunate victim of a severe interior fire. Interior and glass non existant, roof warped. This was a running and driving car up until 5 days ago (5/30/2018).
Other than the fire damage the car is (was) in great condition. The running gear appears in very good condition, it has the 150hp Turbo engine, all the turbo only parts are present and in great shape, manual transmission, manual brakes although I'll assume the master cylinder was heat damaged as the pedal now goes to the floor.
Pros: Low mile, Solid body, good floors, complete car, factory installed turbo with all rare parts intact, manual transmission, excellent tires, spider only wheel covers, straight bumpers etc. I'd think with some temporary wiring the car could be yard driven.
Cons: Severe interior fire, nothing left but seat springs, glass blown out, roof warped from heat, no title, sold as parts.
I'm not interested in parting the car out, I am aware of the value and do not need any help selling it. We were going to use the drivetrain for a project but it's too solid of a car and would like to see it go to someone that could use it or the sum of it's good parts.
Cannot list best offer price shows $0.00 please don't assume it's free. I'm open to reasonable offers and would be happy to assist with shipping if need be.

The fire is unfortunate.

Most folks don't realize that GM did NOT fuse the main 10GA wire up to the fuse box. The DID put a fusible link between the battery and main power wire to the fuse box, BUT it is usually replaced with regular wire when the old battery cable is changed.

In 67 GM finally put in three fusible links in the engine compartment to isolate the battery, regulator, and alternator from starting a fire in the event of a short.

On my cars I install big AGU 50Amp fuses between the battery, alternator, and main power wire to the front fuse box to prevent a fire due to a short. The main 10GA supply wire is only rated to about 50-60Amps before it get's hot and the plastic insulation is flammable!

I helped a club member install fuses on his FC. Later somebody was working on his FC and shorted the wiring up front and blew the 50A fuse. Without it the FC would have probably caught fire.
