When this broke, it made a lot of noise and violently shook the entire car (while driving 80 mph on Interstate 15). Once engine was torn down, discovered a wiped out input shaft seal; pilot end of input shaft bent; and a cracked throw-out bearing snout. Worse.... trashed crankcase (main bearing spun due to unnatural forces).

Hi,

I drove yesterday to a show, 75 plus miles round trip on the freeway at 65 MPH, at one point turned 4,000 RPM going up a hill, no vibration at all.

The engine made noise when I left and when I got home, can't hear it while I'm driving.

I've driven it almost 500 miles now and no vibration, I had a small block Chevy that broke a crank, it still ran but shook like crazy.

I will let you know what I find after I pull the engine in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks again for help.

Ed

While I was on a short trip, this week Ed pulled the powerpack.... ran the engine on the table with full transaxle... then without trans... then sans Diff... noise still there..

Current effort is to get his fresh Tom K. engine in... but parts need powdercoating... while he's at it!! ggg

I am thinking a broken crank or spun bearing, the noise goes away when revved up and the oil pressure goes up, at idle the oil pressure is less, so it makes noise? Go take it apart Matt the suspense is killing us!angry smiley

Today's find. Flange is eighth inch too far out! Crankgear is loose?

Crank endplay rechecked at both ends.... turns out it's in spec! Turns out in the RS he was using the outer ring... which turned out to be loose!

Only other thing was the Harmonic Dampener' was loose.. but didn't wobble and Alignment marks were spot on....but it rubbed the Acc Drive Cover pretty good...but not the Oil Filter!

I'll be taking over on this as Ed needs to get his '60 El Camino to paint before it starts raining...test fitting / aligning all the LONG trim is all that he needs to get done..

Actually, I used my Smartphone with a $15 Borescope... all else is great in the cylinders / heads..

Moto.... Most likely.. but not sure that's the cause of the noise!

We know that.... but not sure that's the noise.... you'd think at low rpm's you would hear 6 slaps....not just one Bang, Bang!

Has anyone ever had a bad HB make loud noises?

Note that this was on a late 60s Chevy v8 but it had a loose harmonic balancer that the dealer misdiagnosed as a rod knock. It showed up at lower rpms. Simply tightening the nut quieted it right down.

Don’t know if that would apply to a Corvair.
