Strange engine noise
Posted by: Sanman1st ()

Hi,

The engine in my FC has a strange banging noise while idling, the noise has been there since I've owned it for the past year. I've driven it about 400 miles and no change and it runs fine.

The PO must have been chasing the same noise, because he changed the balancer to (Clarks C1438) the flywheel to (Clarks solid flywheel C2296E) the pressure plate and clutch disc and switched to electric fuel pump and ditched the fuel pump push rod.

I recently had the oil pan off to fix a dipstick problem, no metal in pan or filter. I removed the fan belt and the noise was still there. I pulled one plug wire off at a time to see if it was coming form a particular cylinder, all cylinders sounded the same.

Today I took the fan belt off and ran the engine, if I revved the engine a little the noise went away, when I revved the engine again the noise came back, did this several times with the same results.

While the fan belt was off I checked the crank end play, .015 - .017, that seems like a lot to me, the manual specs out .002 - .007. Can this much end play cause this intermittent banging noise?

Anybody have any ideas?

Matt will post a video of the engine running.

Thanks,

Ed

And when first started after setting a few hours... Noise was constant and louder and took 20 seconds to go away..

Yes, crank end play will make that type of noise, BTDT. On mine, the crank was the problem, not the thrust bearing. Not 100% certain that is all of your noise but is probably a large contributor to it. Think of how the crank end play is also affecting your valve timing and spark timing.

If these are manual transmission cars have someone push down the clutch pedal while you're listening for the noise. This actually shoves a worn thrust bearing crank to the rear and should change the noise.

Did you take a mechanic's stethoscope and move it around and pin point the general area the noise is coming from? almost sounds like a broken crank or a flywheel / pressure plate / clutch issue, the clarks solid flywheel is super heavy and has been known to cause crank problems, I would jack it up a little and go under and stick a listening device on the bell housing and move around until the noise is the loudest and start from there.

My first guess... broken crank

Stethoscope found noise greatest at Fan Bearing!

Could be washers under bell housing bolts.

Thanks for the input guys,

While running the engine yesterday I noticed the higher the rpm the quitter the noise and then noise will go away until you hit the throttle again. When there is no noise the fan belt is smooth, when the nose starts the fan belt starts vibrating.

I checked the crank end play on a old Corvair short block and it was .0025 -.003, I think the crank end play in mine is to much and causing the noise.

I'm going to pull the engine next week and run it outside the car, from that point I think I put a used engine in the FC from Matt and tear into mine.

If the noise is coming from under the fan bearing housing, maybe pull the housing off and take a look?

IMO, Fan Bearing is bad...

Waste of time until you determine that it is not the fan bearing...

Did it without the belt...

Engine has to come out due to Endplay!

Oh well, brain fade again.

Never heard of an engine suffering from crankshaft endplay???

The question is: does the other end of the crank have end play as well? there are numerous reports of guys driving many miles to get home with engine noise that turned out to be a broken crank, these things will run with a broken crank, it just keeps slapping itself making noise.

When a crank broke (pulley end) in my 110, it made a lot of noise (banging).

I did drive it to a mechanic on the street - 25 mph or so. He was booked - and unimpressed, so I drove it home and back - probably 20 - 25 miles.

I would never had the nerve to drive it at highway speeds.
