OT Jiffy Lube Oil Change Woes
Posted by: glivorsi ()

A good friend of mine took his relatively new Chrysler 300 to our local Jiffy Lube for an oil change. 10 miles later he got all sorts of warning lights so he took the car over to the dealer. Turns out the lubrication champions at Jiffy Lube drained his transmission then dumped an additional 6 quarts of oil into his engine. The dealer is now refilling the transmission to evaluate if it needs to be replaced. The worst part is that it took Jiffy Lube 4 days to return his call after his initial call to the store manager. I know mistakes happen but anyone who's done half a dozen changes knows that tranny fluid and motor oil look nothing alike. I guess they don't check the dipsticks either. No word on if his engine was damaged.

I usually do my own oil but I've often found that these places way over-torque the drain plugs. I had to use a breaker bar to remove the plug on my Mazda after Firestone worked on it. I guess I'll continue to do my own changes!

That's been my policy for about 40 years now. It may be more healthy for the car to change the oils yourself once every three years that using Jiffy Lube once a month.

I have heard they are referred as "iffy lube". Sounds pretty bad to me. I hope they have insurance.

Exactly why nobody touches my cars but me. Unless it's a warranty repair but even the dealer screws up and they did big time with a warranty repair on my wrx transmission which left me stranded on the side of the road, waiting 10 hours in the middle of the night for the correct tow truck to show up because the transmission was locked in multiple gears and car wouldn't roll and a flatbed would not work. Then was side swiped hit and run while waiting. That was not a good night and all that grief caused by an incorrect reassembly of the shift mechanism. But of course they won't admit they did anything wrong so I'm out money to get the body damage fixed but they fixed the transmission for free woohoo

Years ago when I commuted 100 miles each way to work Jiffy forgot to put the oil cap back on, about 10 miles after leaving their shop started smelling burnt oil, pulled over and luckily the cap was embedded in the foam insulation under the hood from when they closed it, turned around pissed and went back to a Manager that told me I was full of it, Went to corporate after that, He no longer worked there after I got done.

Stop going to Jiffy Lube in 2000. They wanted to charge me another $1.00 per quart for Castrol 20w50. I didn't want to use their house brand.

Went to Goodyear and have never had a problem. Now Chevy dealer is doing the truck and car. No problems with oil changes, but having a heck of time getting my truck properly fixed. 12 days now and 4 times into shop and it is there now. 4 rental trucks. 3 times having to leave Augusta GA (70 miles one way) to take rental back just to have my truck mess up 30 miles later. If I was home it is a 26 mile one way trip. But Donna and I are closing up my sister's house and getting it ready to turn it over to a realtor. Didn't need frustrations of the truck and Chevy manager along with this emotional burden we have now.

Al, I would try a different Chev. dealer to fix your running issue. Your warranty is good elsewhere. Just because 1 dealer can't fix it doesn't mean it is not a fixable problem. After 4 visits without satisfaction...

I always changed my own oil, then something changed. Got the KIA for my wife and the car with free oil changes for a year, along with that it gets hand washed and vacuumed. Now its $20 bucks with mobile part synthetic, a genuine filter and a wash. Then I got the Sorento, It's still free, but more than a year old. I still change the oil and lube the motor home and Vair, plus bikes myself. There is the addition cost of driving to buy oil and filters plus taking old oil to recycling. Normally I buy oil at Wally mart and take the old to AZ or AAP.

I usually do my own changes but like with JO my new Honda came with a maintenance plan that includes oil changes at the dealership. I have let some automotive repairs go outside my garage as I get older. Of course no one else will touch my Vair unless it's a Vair specialist.

Update on my friend's 300: the dealership redid the fluids and said the engine and trans were not damaged. jiffy Lube is picking up the $600 tab.

Many times it's not the company... it's the shoddy technicians the local shop's hire. Plus poor management. There is also the problem of finding skilled people in the trades.
Honestly, how many young people do you see today willing to work with their hands in the service industry? Where have the public school shop classes gone?
It's the times we live in I guess.
If you find a great shop, that's the gem in the mix! There are plenty of lazy so called technicians out there. Even at dealerships. The challenge is finding a place that's credible.

So yes... I also service my own vehicles. But I do know of a couple great shops in my area. And these get my referral's.

Jiffy-lube is a sales organisation NOT
a service organisation.

In most of the ones I have seen around here they have video cams on all the techs. Then they say out loud what they are performing, such as "installing the new oil filter, part # XXXXX"
