How important ( or not ) is it to maintain a factory muffler, in order for the Turbo to operate correctly ?

You can get a couple of more psi at the top of the range if you take the muffler off, but it is a bit louder. Whether or not the noise is important
or the little bit extra boost is important is a personal matter.

Bob, GM used the carburetor and Muffler to Restrict the output.... thereby letting the engine live longer! gg

Have run both without and with a free flow style turbo muffler (never had a factory muffler on during my tenure). I currently run straight pipe, no muffler.
The loudness/noise as Kevin states is personal like or not like. The length of the straight pipe does influence how much resonance and sound the driver hears.
I went a little longer pipe this last time and like it better.

The YH carb accounts for most of the turbo's restriction. GM was trying to come up with the lowest back pressure muffler they could that would offer a nice but not overly loud sound. Somewhere though out the testing they discovered that the exact length of the chrome tip affected the sound more than the muffler. They got away with using about the lowest back pressure type. That was the beginning of the word Turbo Muffler. GM began selling these to many non Corvair Spyder owners as a performance and sound quality improvement.

Look inside a turbo muffler from the inlet, and you will see it goes from 2-1/2” to I think 2”. They are far more restrictive than you would think, and it was intentional.

I run mine no muffler, just make sure you run the pipe out as far as the stock tip, and you’ll be fine. It’s really only slightly loud at idle, and almost dead quiet under boost, and now you’ll hear the turbo whistle.

That is only true of repros. All the NOS Turbo mufflers I have seen are 2 1/2 inside.
